More precisely, is the pading on the front lower part of the dash on a '68 Charger the same as on a '69?

Ghoste

I believe it is.  They both have the same part number.

JimShine

From what I see, they are exact in every way.

The lower pads should be the same.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

blackcharger

as far as I know, the only difference is the '68 used a different sized ignition switch, the upper pad is shaped different, and the plastic trim has a different texture.

ChargerBill

I also believe that the Rear Defrost switch is in a different location from '68 to '69...but like already stated, the pads are the same...except for the actual dash pad.

Yep, both the same.

If it matters I believe the ashtray is different, '68 slides down and '69 flips forward.

The lower dash pads will fit 68 & 69, but the 68 gold or tan is not the same as 69 gold or tan, 68 red is not the same as 69 red, the blue's are not the same as well.

Actually, I believe the later '68 Charger ash trays flip forward like the '69. They changed it during the model year at some point but I've never talked to anyone who claims to know exactly when it happened. They also dropped the Inland shifter on the four speed cars and went with Hurst during the '68 model year.

I went out and checked my '68 ash tray. The car was built on April 27th, 1968 is original and has the sliding tray.

I noticed the other day the sliding tray in my car has a padded face. Nice touch! The swivel out tray is a better design though. I can't see how one would leave their smoke in the slide down tray and not have it fall out.

The fold out ash tray comes close to the shifter while in park evan though I have never used it for what it is made for, I think one of the main reasons they went to the fold out ash tray is because so many people could not figure out how to open the slide down style, there was a lot of people on DC.COM that had no idea how it worked.

I don't think we will ever know when where or why they started changing the ash trays.

That fold out can leave a nasty gash on the hand if you hit it on a 2-3 powershift too.

One more reason not to smoke...2-3 knuckle syndrome.  :icon_smile_big:

8wheeler could be right too.  When I had my 68 Road Runner, I do remember that I couldn't figure out the sliding door at first.  But then, I ain't all that bright either.
