Just talked to Dave at Laysons, he says they are making them himself    interesting, I still can't
believe it, nor did I think he would do them himself but thats what he said. He did not know they were
not on the web site yet, and that $45 for them is not just the show price, its the everyday price. He
is about an hour away from me so I am going to go down there with one of my NOS units and
compare them, I will have to see how well they work as well

I still have one in the box myself but it's nice to know they are making spares in case I ever need one.

Here you go Chris, life is crazy. Judge for your self, but I think the Repo unit looks very good for $45 for sure.

Three differences I see right away
1  the flap that the key opens to keep crud out is not in the new ones. But it sits under the lid so is it that a big deal ?
2  the key is not the same stile at all, Dave said he checked and the key he could find that was close would cost a fortune.
3  the bottom of the new unit sits down deeper, but that just adjust the spring tension, so that means nothing.

I like them, if you look for the key flap, you can tell immediately its a repop, if it does not have that flap. I will put a couple
of my hardly used NOS units in perfect shape still and save them, and used these repops for awhile

Just ordered a couple. I already have a locking cap that came with the car, but it can't hurt to have extras just in case.

I called Layson's and ordered one of the locking caps and the catalog for my 68 and it arrived withing six days. Looks great, dropped it in and its a great piece of mind...I live in a small town, never leave my car alone for an hour unless its in the garage and door closed...But what a great piece of mind!!!!!

By the way, thanks for the info...I think the gas cap is on their web site now, too!!!!

I think you already know the answer to that question Chris.   

I can just picture some people when it comes to basic instructions, like say trying to cook Kraft Dinner.  I am sure there are some people out there that simply submegre the whole unopened box into a pot of boiling water.
