I want to dye some interior trim pieces black. What are some good brands of dye and what should I expect to pay per can. The stuff in the year 1 catalog is $40/ a can. That seems really high.

I have used MoPaints with good luck at $25/can. I know other members have used SEM dye with good results.

I have used the $5 Plasticote black vinyl dye on my Trans Am and it still looks good after 4 years. I think Duplicolor makes some too if you don't need to worry about original color matches.

I used www.semproducts.com with great results

Either satin black or Landau Black matches well.

You can get it at any good auto paint supply store.  make sure to get the vinyl or plastic prep spray as well & follow the instructions on the can

Try your local automotive paint shop.  The one I use still has all the original mix codes for 60s and 70s. The B7 interior dye they mixed was dead on. If they still have the paint card for the year in question it will have all the interior and trim codes for that year on the back.

I like SEM. I have tried Platikote and it feels tacky and unnatural.

Another vote here for SEM.  Have heard good things about MoPaint but I have never used it.

Does anyone know if the SEM aerosal dye is designed for use on seat covers? The guy from MoPaint told me that his products were not flexible enough to be used on seats.

I've never heard of anyone using the stuff on seats. I doubt anything would withstand that kind of flexing.

I was looking through a Eastwood's catalog and they have dye that is "supposed" to be flexible enough for seats. It says the color are OEM Ford matches but, black should be pretty uniform. It is $10 a can and I was hoping to dye a set of '85 Daytona buckets for my low buck Challenger resto. They are silver and gray now.

SEM is the way to go, I did my head rests and color match was spot on. I've been VERY disappointed with MOPAINTS recently. When I did my car in 2003/2004 their Burnt Orange was spot on. Then a year later the B/O was more brown thean anything. I called, they replaced it but it was still brown, not even close. Then I tried Bright Metallic blue for my '72 and it was flat, not semi gloss like original and metal flakes were too big...I'll never buy their stuff again

SEM!!!!

SEM!!! I used to be a detailer, I used several colors... covers good, matches, and longlasting, for example in my daily driver I had some thick rubber catchall floor mats, that were clear, I decided to dye them with SEM graphite to match my interior (01 S-10) and after 3 years they look as good as the day I dyed them, you may be tempted to buy that cheep duplicolor shit at autozone, wal-mart etc. I have used it a couple of times, it will look good at first, but it'll flake/wear off.

I found a supplier for SEM locally off the website....70 miles away is local BTW ;)

According to the supplier the SEM products can be used on seats without a problem as long as the vinyl prep is used before the color.

He said $14 per can and he can't ship because UPS won't take it...is this in the ballpark as I have to drive 140 miles round trip to get the stuff?
