I have just purchased a '73 Challenger that was formally a parts car. The problem I have is the dash pad was sold on E-Bay with the VIN tag. My question is how do I get a new one? I do have the title, and the numbers on the firewall/cowl area match the title. Has anyone seen or heard of this before? Thanks, Bill

That's ok -- I wasn't expecting you to know him, I was more hoping Troy would see this and reply.

His screen name is "Troy" and he's the administrator, owner, and general boss around the forum.  He also has a '73 Barracuda with a somewhat similar identity crisis.  He'll chime in soon, I'm sure...

BTW, welcome to the site!!!

Well............. the big difference between my car and yours is that I have a state issued replacement VIN attached to the door frame. I can legally get mine titled with that but your situation might be trickier. Do you have a title for the car or any other legal proof of ownership? You can get a new tag made through http://www.datatags.com/ but you need proof of ownership and all the documentation you can come up with. The legality of this method has been brought into question though. The most legitimate thing you can do is to drag all of your documentation to your local license bureau and have them inspect the car and issue a replacement tag. It will NOT look like an original but will make you the legal owner of that car. You better make sure that whoever purchased the dash didn't also title another car with that VIN first. Good luck!

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Thanks Troy, I do have the title, and a bill of sale. Do you know how I would go about checking on that VIN number being used on a different car?

could you get the name of the guy who bought the pad from the guy you bought the car from and contact him, if it was me, and I would imagine most other people would be happy to give you the right tag if I had it.  I'm sure you already thought of this though.  Good Luck!!
