I had my radiator recored some months ago but I didn't replace the old hoses.
After a my buddy drove the Charger around the blok (1/2 mile) to get her back in the garage,
all the coolant leaked out thru the riped lower radiator hose. No water, hot engine, but no harm done.

Now I went to the shop but they replied there is NO spring needed in that lower hose? True or false?
A new hose costs around 60 bucks, an imitation costs half of that. It does not come with the spring.

So is the spring needed or not?
Thanks for your imput  :icon_smile_cool:

I always run the spring take the spring out of the old hose and put it in the new one. It is their to stop the hose sucking in which will stop water flow.

:iagree:    always put a spring in a OEM type lower hose .stops the hose collapsing.

it may be OK without it But I would use one if even if it is just a coiled coat-hanger

My brothers 440 cuda had cooing issues one time (.......okay several! lol)....it turned out there was no spring in the lower hose, it has rusted out. We had the hood open and was poking about trying to figure it out when he reved to the motor up and you could see the hose calapsing starving the motor of cool coolant! Always run a srping!

I don't have one in mine and it works AOK.  I also don't believe the new hose on my buddy's 68 GTX has it either.  :rotz:

All of the part stores around here say no, you don't need the spring. Well look at all the hoses they sell, none
of them come with spring anymore, at least at the stores around me. So I always use my old spring. If you
have seen one hose collapsed you will always run a spring of some kind.

My next door neigbor with the 71 440 six pack Cuda strongly suggested it. I went to several auto part stores and no one carried a hose spring. I went to my local hardware store and bought a coil of no. 9 galvanized wire ($5) and made my own spring. Got a 1" diameter pipe and coiled the wire around it. It worked out great! That's also the trick to re-installing it.  Wind it tight over anything (pipe, large wooden dowel, handle, etc.) and then feed it through the lower hose.  Then let it unwind and voila!  Perfect installation in seconds.

Looks like I may be a bit late to help you guys out, but in case anyone else is looking for that hose with the spring, the part number I have is 60659.  That's a Goodyear number, but when I gave it to the Carquest guy it crossed over to one of their "other brand" hoses that did in fact have a spring in it.  I think I paid around $15 for it and it was ready to pop in. (with a little trimming if I recall)   Hope this helps someone.
