69 Charger Woodgrain backing plates

G'day all.

Currently have the black plastic plates in my 69 charger.  Am looking at changing the dash to woodgrain.
What is the best way to do this?

I see that yearone sells the woodgrain inserts only and that you need to have the backing plates. Is there anywhere that sell the dash backing plates also? Can you stick the woodgrain inserts over the plastic plates or would that look a bit rough/not authentic?

Any ideas?

Cheers

My guess is that you'd need to have the correct SE dash (or backing plates at a minimum).  I think the woodgrain overlay placed on top of the standard textured dash would look pretty bad.  'Course look around on eBay and you'll probably see an example too...   :rotz:

Sounds like you're not too worried about "factory correct" details, so maybe it would be easier to find a '70 Charger dash??

www.redlinegauges.com sells a woodgrain kit that looks decent....only drawback is the fact that the woodgrain overlays arent "molded" into the openings......its just flat.

It does look pretty good though....I have seen pics of completed dashes

thanks for replies.

Those plates do look good. $340 is what they are selling for. Seems a little steep.

These guys have the "like original" woodgrain inserts on an aluminum backing plate.

Not sure of the quality, but for that price, it'd better be good.

The pics look pretty good.

I saw these at Carlisle over the weekend. They looked REALLY nice...! No 8 track bezel yet though...

G'day.

Have been offered these woodgrain attachments for $50NZD (approx $30USD). Do you think they would be worth buying? Repairable with yearone covering? Any suggestions would be great.

The woodgrain is aluminium,it has tabs which fit through holes in the plastic fascia.

And if it comes with everything else in that pic, it's just an extra bonus. ;D

G'day guys.

Ended up buying the backing plates.

Has anyone tried the woodgrain bezels from yearone? Just wondering how flat/smooth my alloy plates would have to be before fixing them. How thick are they?

Cheers

i am not sure i think they are just wood grain stickers  , not seen them in person , but i will probably get some for my 69 later on to freshen my old original woodgrain dash up . it needs to be pretty straight though . could always repair them the same as car body sheet metal   and then use body filler ( bogg)  and then prime first .

Do some searching on this site as well as the 1970 Charger Registry as there are a few options out there as far as where to purchase these items from.  There have been some threads about guys that have bought them and were quite pleased.

A couple of other companies that come to mind are Redline and P & G.

i used em to cover my faded S.E. panels. they are a thick vynal with the genaric wood grain pattern. Ii carefully trimmed mine on the radio face plate so the original panels grain shows and at a quick glance it's fine, but i wouldn't say they're "Show Quality".

How thick would you say it is mate (1mm)? Does the panels have to be dead smooth or can you have a bit of leeway?

Cheers

ok i took pics...posting...  :icon_smile_wink:

Brock Samson

so as you can see it's really nothing more than wood grain contact vynal... as opposed to "paper".
I had no provision for the flasher, when i bought the car the stock type rocker switch was simply hanging under the cluster...
so, I had to cobble togeather a "Patch" for the hole which perhaps you can see...  :scope:

Brock Samson

i know it looks like crap, but hey..  :P

Brock Samson

up close it's pretty hard to avoid the glare...
so, the holes are a wee bit large which allows the original facia to peek through.
not ice the se trim rings are not chromed like the others the radio shows this...

Brock Samson

the woodgrain kit came with another radio "roller" style faceplate...
it's not "show" quality as I said.  :-\
my car's a frankenstein monster though anyhows...

glove box door is the best piece.
