Brake lights wired to the turn signals in the dash?

Noticed on my '68 Charger R/T the other day that when I have the parking lights on and I step on the brakes, the two green lights in the dash for the turn signals come on. What is going wrong there? In my '67 Charger the turn signals in the dash are wired directly to the turn signals in the grille from the factory.

But in the '68 it is like they are wired to the turn signals in the rear, so when the brake lights or turn signals come on back there, so do the dash lights. Could something have gotten crossed over I wonder, or would someone had to have modified it to be this way? Maybe something for drag racing? The car is built up pretty good for that.

What happens when you step on the brakes if the parking lights are not on?

Whenever you get lights lighting up when other lights are turned on, a bad ground is the first thing to look for.

you dash lights should be tied into your front signals obviously right now they are tied into the rear signals , possibly the wires from the TS switch in the column are inthe wrong position although I woudl think you would not have brake lights if this was the case

I have a similiar problem on my '68 R/T.

When I hit the brakes the right front turn signal lamp (under the bumper) turns on - and stays on until I let off the brakes.  At the same time the green turn signal lamp on the dash is lit.  Neither "blink", like when the turn signal is activated.  They just...stay on, until I let off the brakes.

I've been chasing that electrical gremlin for quite some time. :-\  As far as I know nothing has been modified, but who knows....

I feel your pain, Fastback...I feel your pain.

I bet is a turning switch broblem/short inside.

I'll have to take a look on wiring diagram to make a better explain about that, but:

Turning switch is a master routing matrix to all 4 corners and that includes the brakes. ( on 3rd gens includes hazzards, not on earliers ) The brake pedal signal enters to column and turning switch ( on 3rd gens is a white wire ). When there is not turning swicth on to one or another side, the by default the white wire is linked ALLWAYS ON to rear brake lights. That makes when you press the brake pedal power be routed ro rear lights.

The cluster turning signal is really spliced from the front turning lights to not be mixed with brakes.

The left and right turning lights are labeled on front and rear with green and Brown wires down the dash. Rear are those colors darker, and  fronts are lighter ( even brown really is become on tan ).

3rd gens ( Also 70 since is a later wiring design ) when turns on the hazzards, then cut the brake source to take another input and send to all 4 corners the blinker function coming from flasher.

On earliers, the hazzard control is out from the column, so you never cut the brake input signal... is a shared wire, so you are able to press brakes and they will turn on even with hazzards on.

Checked out the car a couple days ago and no problems. Must have been where the turn signal switch was located at the time, maybe just a little bit out of alignment or something.

Oh yeah, and I have a wiring diagram, thanks Shawn.

Your turn signal switch has "kissed the baby"  as we say....lol   The brake lights are tied in together with the turn signals.  I had to change one of those out  for the same reason.   They just wear out over time.
