HEY IM JUST STARTING TO PUT MY CAR TOGETHER AND I WAS WONDERING WHAT COLOR THE FUEL FILL TUBE SHOULD BE ITS SANDBLASTED NOW ANY PICS OR INFO WOULD BE HELPFUL THANKS SHAWN

IIRC the filler tube is more-or-less bare steel.  I do know it's not supposed to be body color, if that helps.

I've got two left over from parts cars. Both are plain steel.

I agree. I have even painted aluminum in the color aluminum. Keeps it looking "New"

Its actually galvanised steel.  Detail grey looks close although galvanised has that "mottled up" look

I agree.  It is a galvanized steel tube.  Hence most of them rusting like the gas tanks.

Yeah, you can't duplicate galvinized steel look. I did forget that. You did say you sand blasted it. The raw look is probably gone now so painting it would be best. If you can some how wipe it down and find the galvinized look then skip the paint. I do think its too late. Go for the paint.

There still are places out there that will regalvanize your pieces.  Just have to look and do a search on the web!

When I was cleaning mine and scraping some spots, I could of sworn that it look like it had a lead application on it. I have lead type flakes coming off. :yesnod:

That would be the galvanizing.

Believe it or not guys, I just got back from the Dodge Charger Regisrty meet in Jefferson, MO and found out that it is lead coating on the fuel filler tube. I did not find out how to duplicate it, but it is lead.

Its lead. Just by coincidence i was cleaning mine yesterday getting ready for install.  Had a huge blob of undercoating on it  where it passes out the bottom so i went to use the propane torch to soften up the undercoating. Almost immediatly the lead started running.  But i discovered if you clean the tube real well, Then start heating it up to the point where the lead just starts to flow then pull back the heat it allows the lower lead to mix with the top lead and looks like new again.  Gives that molted shiny/dull appearance.  Something you guys might want to exreriment with.

Hmmmm..propane torch & gas fumes..  :nono:

I hope you had this out of the car!!!

LOL!!!   Note the second sentence states "getting ready to install".  But you bring up an excellent point. Dont attempt this with the tube installed.

I have some old pieces/chunks of lead from when I used to race in a soap box derby when I was younger.  I wonder what would happen if I heated up the tube (out of the car) and ran the lead block across it?

There was a thread on Moparts recently about filler tubes, and it was pointed out that the filler tubes were coated with a mixture of lead and tin.  No one there seemed to know how to duplicate the exact look of the originals, but at least we know what they coated them with.

Always learning something...

OK , at this point to make it look correct , glass bead it then scotch brite then brush the part with a tightly packed stainless wire brush then use satin clear to preserve it . I have used this technique for years on many parts through out my many cars and have received many complements .
