what the heck is an abs speed ring, and would this ring and pinion work in my 73 with a 8 1/4 rear??

thanx

The ring in the rear end that ABS uses to get a signal from for ABS brakes. It needs to know when a wheel is locked up due to brakes.

I have wondered how one could maybe retro fit ABS brakes on an old Mopar. I am thinking  that ABS has its own set of electronics independant from the actual computer. So I wonder if one could add ABS to a muscle car. You would need the ring and the ABS electronics along with the brake line plumbing for the ABS. Has anyone ever tried this?  With the Dodge trucks up until recent years the Chrysler 9 1/4 was in half tons and the Dana 60/70 in the heavier trucks.

ABS systems do have their own computer and wiring for their use different from fuel injection.  They take input from wheel speed semsors, VSS (Veh speed sensor), and preprogrammed factors in the computer due to weight of the vehicle etc to operate the ABS.
I've never heard of anyone installing ABS in an older car, but I imagine it could be done.  The important thing to remember about ABS wiring is that you cannot repair it, once it's boken, you have to get a new harness.  So if you're pulling the abs out of a newer car make sure all the wiring is intact etc.  Newer cars might also receive info from the fuel injection computer ...

how about just the ring and pinion??  Does that matter year to year, or will any mopar 8 1/4 ring and pinion set up work in my rear end?

The 8 1/4" ring & pinion are interchangeable from '69- on.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

It has to do with the specific number of ohms of resistance being read by the computer.  If you splice in a repair, it changes the resistance of the wiring.  I don't work on these modern systems, but that's what I learned when I took ABS training.

The wiring harness can be repaired if you do it properly

You also have to remember Chrysler had 4 wheel ABS and RWAL (rear wheel anti lock) systems on their trucks.   RWAL really wasn't much more than an electronic proportioning valve.
