3rd Gen Wiper Mystery

OK guys here's a neat one I'm having problems with wiper arms. Currently the 2 speed wiper arm is too short and it fit's into but not through the wiper linkage. So after a couple of revolutions the linkage pops off. I've collected 3 arms so far from 2 speed and 3 speed motors:
- Current arm with stem about 3/4 inch long. seems to have a recess for a clip to go on to hold it in place
- anothe arm, looks the same but stem is even shorter
- One arm with a big white "thing" on the end. No way will it go on the wiper linkage

Am I missing a part or is the wiper linage to thick?

sorry no photos, I'm in korea trying to get parts to have a pal fix it for my wife, that miss problem used up all my time before I left

Thanks

AK.

all 3rd gens have a big little "white thing" covered with a duster boot ( normally broken or missed and no replace part... I'm searching it ), hooked between the main arm end that hooks with the wiper motor crank. Is the parking cam.... is that one you talk ?...

Yup, have one of those but how in the world does it hook to the wiper linkage? it's mostly flat, there is no post or "male" end to insert into the wiper linkage

Nacho-RT74

whoa ?.

I'll try to explain, sorry no pics by the moments.

there is a crank attached on to wiper motor. That crank it has a shaft with a groove at the end.

the wiper parking cam goes assemblied on a plate with a hole to insert the crank shaft. On that plate is assemblied the cam stuff. One of the pieces of the cam package it has the same hole to inster the shaft and after that, the main wiper arm with the big hole that matches with the inner white stuff eccetric area. After that the spring washer and retainer on to teh shaft groove

The center piece it has an eccentric area that relocates the main wiper linkage that is inserted on it to backward to change the begining and end of wipers track. That is what makes the wipers hidde under hood when you turns off, and weep them working only over the glass when you turns on.

Between the outer white piece and the inner white piece ( with the eccentric area ) there is a spring, hooked with the shaft that is what it pushes the inner piece to move it when it feels the spin change of the wiper motor at on and off momment.

That asembly works GOOD ONLY on one position. I don't know if cam package has instructions to assemblied, but spring only can be fit on one place to make it works.

I found this diagram. Is not EAXCTLY like 3rd gens assembly since doen't show the cam assembly mounted on the baseplate stuff and the can is showed on one piece only and 3rd gens are two parts, but the last one ( right down corner ) is the most similar.

By the way, there is a guy selling a 150 Miles speedo... I think you were searching it.

Thanks Nacho!

The diagram helps to highlight my problem. Take a look at the bottom left picture. See the "drive link" that goes to wiper linkage. See how it's real thin where it attaches to the white plastic "eccentric cam?" Well if mine was thin like that I'd be fine but it's thick, about 3/8 and inch thick and the end has a bearing. Maybe I can get the wife of kids to take a picture.

Oh already found and replaced the speedo...My shoddy reinstallation of the cluster gave me that miss problem two weeks ago

I was checking the right bottom pic and the cam assembly is two pieces instead one as I was told earlier, just that the cut view didn't help at first. Only rest to show you how it goes attached on the baseplate I'm telling you, between wiper motor crank and cam assembly. Something like thy call on diagram as "washer"

Ok. on my assembly what is the same that your 3rd gens since is the same car, there is not any kind of bearing on it. The "drivelink" is what I call the main wiper arm, and is the link between cam assembly/wipercrank, and thet link between both wiper arms pivots.

How thin or fat is the "drive link" ? well is the same thin/fat than the eccentric cam step. Once drive link is sat on cam, surface assembly is completelly plain to install the spring washer and retainer.

Now if we are talking about how big is the hole on drive link to fit on eccentric cam... well is the same that the step cam diameter. I think around an inch, maybe a little bit more

It looks you also has missed out ( same as me ) the wiper dust boot because you still haven't mentioned that stuff what covers all the assembly to keep out dust and water and keep greased the cam, what is really and very important.

well I have it, but is broken. This boot is clipped on to the drive link and cover all the cam assembly including baseplate.

My 72 has had no working wipers for 11 yrs because i can't keep it together.when i got it it was missing retaining clip that holds the linkage arm to the motor crank.I got the pieces off a 76' fury as they look the exact same.Put it all together and i got the wipers to cycle 3 times across the windshield and try to park ,and then it just comes apart at the plastic cam joint.put it back together and a couple of passes and apart it goes again. :flame:
Rain x is my best friend.but when you have condensation on the glass your just hosed :flame:
I so wish i could get the wipers to stay together also. :'(
I was wondering when i put the inner plastic cam piece inside the larger do you have to have the spring preloaded on the oposite side of the tab inside the larger cam? It's been a yr since i messed with it so I might be confused. It would be so nice to have wipers :yesnod:

Nacho-RT74

the springs only works good in JUST ONE POSITION, but don't remember which one. I have tp remove my assembly since needs to be greased. Since doesn't have the rubber boot dust needs more lubrication. I will try to relubricate with bearings grease this time.

Once I remove the cam from wiper crank, I'll try to take pics and post.

One note in advance... springs must work and move/relocate the cam when wiper motor works in oposite direction, since when you turns of the wiper switch, changes polarity inside the motor untill sense the parking position switch inside the motor itself and cuts the power.

My 74 had the same problem I think, I just ran some wire through it and tucked it all back in there.

AKcharger

Well sorry for the late reply. Glad to know I'm not the only one in this boat. Nacho as always you're of great help. that last illustration show the drag link connection THIN mine was fat with a bushing. after I left I had a pal look at it and he removed that bushing and fabricated one out of a few old bolts "see attachments"  very resourceful guy, anyway only thing I can figure is at some point someone indeed swapped out the entire drag link and wiper linkage and stuck something else in there. it works but I'll be on the look out for the proper stuff as soon as I get back from Korea.

Well mystery is solved for now, answer for others is manufacture your own bolts

AK

Nacho-RT74

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I can't see the attachments

That's wierd??? well it was just two pictures of the manufacture bushing to make the arm work

Nacho-RT74

Ok I also noticed that the pics I posted about wiper cam dust cover( inserted image from yahoo photos ) didn't come out to topic even I was able to see them at first time. I don't know if you saw them.

would be nice get those pics you tried to post AK...

Well in my search for the right one I've bought two motors (2 speed and 3 speed) with arms, the one witht he car and an additioanl one from a guy at the site here and all 4 all are pretty much the same within 1/2-3/4 inch of each other...I dun know  :rotz:

Nacho-RT74

sorry AK... I think I was wrong, it looks the right crank, just that I didn't remember how was mine.

just recently took pics and started a topic
