I know of this car it is the one recorded as the newport rhode island museum car in the 79 records.That B5 car might be JW walters car in WI.The other B5 daytona that was never titled was the Billy Card daytona of of NY

.Newport Auto Museum In RI. Ive heard they might have a daytona in there XX29L9B390009. that sold brand new in Providence RI.

It's interesting that they say the MSO is dated 3/22/69. While I'm not 100% familiar with how MSO's work, it seems implausible that the paperwork would precede the car's initial Hamtramck production by almost two months. IIRC 390009 shows a 5/20/69 SPD.

Any other ideas on this?

This is the car I saw sitting on the Brockton Dodge showroom floor around 1987ish. I remember the Wynns sticker on the wing. The bodywork at the time was pretty wavy. Lasty I had heard was that this car was in a museum in New England.

I don't. They don't trouble me on the Birds but it seems to take all the sleekness away from the Daytona. To my eyes anyway.

I dont know how they can call it "Original" with a repaint and all the mods...
I guess it's a relitive term.. i dont like the v. top either, or the wheels, or the way the stripe was painted...
I wonder if that's a stock color?...

Not sure if it was mentioned or not, but the rear stripe with the "DAYTONA" in it is way too far up on the quarter panel. I do like the top...

There are a few things I don't car for on the car, but a more that I do love. First of all its a Daytona. Who doesn't love that?

B5 blue love that color on a Daytona.

Hate the top though. Liked the vinyl top on the 500 my dad had, hate it on Daytona's.

That might be what turns me off on that car then. The more I looked at it, the more I thought it was blue. I still don't think I like the vinyl on a Daytona but I think that car would look better if it were black. Just a personal opinion though.

Unfortunately that would still be a problem in our lil towns local Wal-Mart parking lot.......too many full size vans and 4X4 pickups around here. Unless of course you have a remote alarm system on your Daytona/Superbird! But then again......who in there right mind would drive there precious metal to a parking lot like that anyway.

I've drove the 500 to the local Walmart. Drove it to the theater the other day to take my boy to see the movie Cars.

I only say precious metal because I would prefer to see more of these cars out in the open....in everyday traffic. But guys who spend as much on these kind of cars usually don't unless it's close or a special event or occasion.

Well i have driven my Daytona not to wall mart but barns and nobal ( To buy a new mopar magazine ), Best buy ( Came out and found people taking pictures of it ) And down to the Dodge Dealership ware i work and parked way out back only to have people thinking it was a trade in and wanted to testdrive it, get the F out of here. I have had lots of mopars down through the years and got lots of looks in this Chevy town but when i got my Daytona it is just unbelivable how much attention it gets. I love it when i go to the local cruse and park next to all the mustangs and chevys ( Whos owners wont look it the Daytona ) And a friend comes up while i am standing next to all the x-brand people and says ( How do you feel heaving the most expensive car here ) i just laugh.

I'll agree with you on wanting one in the worst way. I have thought lately though of putting the 500 up for sale, and taking what cash I do have and seeing if maybe I can swing one. But I wouldn't want to be car less for any amount of time, so I don't think I have the guts to do that. I think I'll hold out, and see what a few more years brings me. The majority of the people who have the cars now aren't getting any younger, so I figure in another 20 years or so I'll have an excelent shot at one.

Troy on the other hand I think he is getting closer and closer to actually getting one.

i forgot about that picture , looks nice red paint / white top- stripe -interior . like ghoste said i also think the vinyl takes away the aero look , it looses its sleekness if that makes sense . extremely rare yes , looks good

Weirdly enough, several of the racing Daytonas had a faux vinyl top. #30 Dave Marcis, #6 Buddy Baker had the full painted roof treatment, and both the #99 of Charlie Glotzbach and the #6 of Neil "Soapy" Castles had the C-pillars and a strip along the driprail painted to resemble a V-roof.

To some degree, I wonder if the aerocar vinyl roof treatment was a carryover from the non-aero car paint jobs these teams used.

Well I recognize the HEMI 500 vinyl top car, definately know that car as it was my dad's.

The vinyl roof R4 red Daytona on the other hand. I believe was in Texas back in the 70's. If i'm not mistaken it was a half vinyl top? Or could be a different car. I know dave nascarxx has some photo's of a vinyl top Daytona from that area. I think it had a half vinyl top though.

Yeah I know where the car is today. It didn't take too much searching to find its whereabouts being that it seems everyone remembers that car. It was on the cover of an Automotive Quarterly back in the early 80's. I'd love to find a complete copy of that magazine to add to my collection, but so far all I can track down is the excerpt of the photo's of his car. NOt the complete magazine.

, it says the vinyl was dealer installed , and then removed when it was restored later on. i am thinking because vinyl tops were dealer installed it would not have shown up on the fender tag . there could be more Daytona's/C500's running around ,that have had there tops removed in the 70's & the holes welded shut repainted then passed through numerous owners and more body and paint work ,and the owners being un familiar with vinyl tops being on XX29 chargers ,if they looked up in side the trunk / rear plug - under side might of thought the welded up holes were part of the conversion work

This car is posted on one of the Mopar forums on facebook now for sale for $449,000 owner claims at this time the mileage is 7,000. The car is said to have still never been registered as it was a rolling billboard for his father's dealership that closed in 1987, all miles were put on with a dealer tag I would have to think. The story is the dealer installed the vinyl top because they were popular on most cars of the time.

Its funny to see this post still active as just a couple of days ago Larry and I were talking about this very subject. I asked Larry if any of the Daytona's ever came from the factory as a vinyl top option, he was sure they never did. He said it might have been some dealer option after it had arrived at the dealership because back in the day vinyl tops were the bomb, lol. I see in the picture that the B5 blue ones "Charger" emblems were deleted for some reason. Why was that? Just a thought....

Hoping to get pics of my car with a vinyl top from the long time owner.
Looks like you guys found that it likely had one after taking the car down.
An oddly the long time owner's son asked that very same question when he was at Larry's shop, cause he thought he remembered the car having a vinyl top when he was a kid.
Still hoping he can get those pics from long ago that he remembers.
