As a matter of fact, I rarely and I mean rarely run into a 2nd gen owner who was inspired by the Dukes. It's the car man...don't give the Duke boys credit for something Chrysler designed.  :Twocents:

Sorry to continue this debate, but...
As a young child of about 6 or so, when the Dukes first came out, I had to know what kind of car the General Lee was. I was in awe. I'm not sure what it was exactly, the beautiful styling, the stunts, the jumps, or what. All I knew is that at six years old, THAT WAS THE CAR I wanted when it came time to drive.
My dad was a big Ford fan at the time (T-Birds mostly), but I grew to love the '68 Chargers the most. I got my first '68 when I was 16 in 1986, & still have it to this day. My dad has since converted, & I now have a '69 & a '70 as well.
Honestly, & no offense to the GL owners, I am admittedly tired of seeing so many GL clones. One year at Carlisle I had the misfortune to be parked next to one on the show field. The car owner had the DoH theme song on constant loop playing over... & over... & OVER... ALL...DAY... LONG!!! That was really the icing on the cake for me for the GL clones.
I am especially sick of hearing about more Chargers being destroyed just for the hell of a stunt show at some festival. I cringe when one more is destroyed. Times have changed, these cars are becoming more & more scarce and valuable. They are part of automotive history, considered one of the finest looking cars ever produced, and should not be destroyed for some gimmick at a side show.

I loved the show, still do to this day. I won't say that the show 100% influenced me to love Chargers so much, but it did play a big part of it. If it wasn't for the Dukes who knows, maybe I'd have T-Birds these days. Or worse yet, Mustangs.

I applaud the person who is tackling the restoration of GL #1. Looking over that car at Carlisle, I would have left it for dead. In it's present state, it is nothing more than a piece of twisted metal, a mere shadow of a Charger it once was. I'd consider a resto almost impossible on that one. Without seeing documentation or photos of it in it's former GL robes, most people at a car show wouldn't even know what it really was, just some hulk of a bent up car it is now. The car does have some celebrity status, & deserves to be saved. I'd rather see it in a museum fully restored than left to rot.
OK, rant off.

Vanishing Point? Was it a hit when it came out in the theatres? I couldn't answer that, but how many VP clones do you see running around? I have seen ZERO.
I have seen...more than zero.  But they are a little easier to tuck away.  And a white Challenger doesn't necessarily scream clone.
Quote from: Chris G. on June 19, 2006, 06:40:29 PMNash Bridges? Serious? Did that show ever crack the top 10 in ratings? Again, how many clones do you see running around?
No, I wasn't really serious about either one.  But it brings up an interesting point.  I bet the guy who had a yellow convertible Cuda years before Nash Bridges existed just HATES when people come up and mention the show ten times a day.  "Hey, man, you should dress like Don Johnson and hang out with Cheech."

i just can't wait till the "Joe Dirt" superbird clones catch on.........man, think of what the first one of them will be worth

Actually I do believe that the Joe Dirt wing car was a Daytona.

naah.. it was a clone, trust me on this one...  :icon_smile_big:

All I got to say is that this discussion is almost as vain as the 1969/2006 Charger debate in off topic ...

And I am glad the General Lee was not a Torino   :o

I sometimes wish it was.  You don't see Ford fans falling all over themsleves to make Starsky and Hutch cars.  Then again, there is a 67 Mustang "Eleanor" fad going on right now.

Yeah, I meant it was supposed to be a Daytona. Thanks Troy.

i think people should just let the whole thing rest about the first GL its getting kinda old , nobody really knows the truth about it ( JUST RUMORS  )  anyway, if they do they wont talk they will just make something up to keep your mind in the red .

uuummm . . . What?

The car is definitely LEE#1, and it's definitely being fully restored right now.  No question about that.

The only issue that's not public knowledge is the name of the car's current owner.

knightrider

I KNOW THE FULL HISTORY OF THE CAR  TRUST ME AND THATS NO SH*T. I KNOW IT IS LEE 1 THATS FOR SURE! I BASICLY DON'T CARE WHO OWNS IT OR WHO IS DOING THE RESTO ON THE CAR, BECAUSE IT DON'T MATTER TO ME ( I DON'T OWN IT) AND DON'T CARE, ITS ALL FUNNY ENTERTAINMENT JUST TO LISTIN TO ALL THE STORYS ABOUT HOW ITS UNFOLDING.   I GUSS WE'LL SEE IN FUTURE  :yesnod:

I have no problem with General Lee clones,I have a friend who has one and it gets a lot of attention.  Everybody likes the car. I just wish they would stop jumping them!

Cool......no, just a slackjaw hick.

I liked the show the DOH but mostly the general lee & own a 69 Charger because of it. But it isn't a clone and I never wanted to build it as one. For some its the general to me its a 69 Charger.

Its also why most people even want a charger and why the second gen is so valuable. If it wasnt for the General Lee what would a second gen be worth?, which is what most people only care about anyways.

Excuse me for being so forward, but,,, (ARE YOU NUTS)??  DOH was bug when I was growing up and I could not stand to watch it. It made me sick to know they were wasting Charger after Charger. The plot was allllllllllways the same. Daisy was the only real eye catcher on the show.

My uncle Jack took me for a couple of blasts down the road in his 68' R/T Charger that he bought new. After that, seeing what the DOH show was doing was a crime........

Yeah, I have to side with Steve on that.  I was hot on them before the DOH came out myself but that only means I'm old.  All the same, I have to think that if DOH was the main reason most people were into these cars and it was the driving force behind their value, then it should follow that most 69 Chargers would be converted to GL's and not restored or modified in other ways.
I also don't think that most people only care about the value of these cars either.  Lots do, but lots are into it because they love the car and the hobby and the people involved.

I'm confused. They showed the Lee #1 but then they also showed the wrecked race Charger that the Dukes bought. Which one did they find...the General or the wrecked race one?

The wrecked "Petty" car is LEE #1. It was repainted after the famous jump you see in the intro of every episode.

THE WRECKED RACE CHARGER WAS USED IN THE DOH SERIES AS A WRECKED PETTY RACE CAR THE DUKE BOYS BUY FOR THE MOTOR! THE SAME CAR IS LEE 1 THAT WAS JUMPED OVER THE POLICE CAR IN THE FIRST EPISODE!! :yesnod:

What you got to realize though, to them in the 80's when the show was aired, a 69' Charger was like a 92 Buick to us in the present day. We wouldn't give it a second thought if we jumped one of them classics. I gotta say tho, it still sucks for them to ruin all of them 69's.
