Today I went to the two body shops in town and got an estimate for my paint job. I am going to paint it B5 blue which in the original color. My body is pretty much flawless. There is no real body damage. One guy wanted $6000, and the shop which I bought the car from said they would do it for $3000-3500.  I think if I will go with the shop that said 3 grand. Kind of a no brainer I have seen his work, and I bought my car from him, but I am going to go to other shops in the area and see what they say.  I did not know the paint itself was so much!

It will not get painted untill I get my engine work done, so I have plenty of time to figure this out.

moparguy01

keep in mind by the time you get to doing it the prices WILL change. the price of paints has gone up alot so far this year. and i dont think its going to drop.

Silver R/T

depends what kind of work they do. that 3K extra might/not be worth it.

The guy who quoted me 3,000 dollars is a person who I have known most of my life. He lived accross the street from me growing up. I went to high school with his son and I bought my Charger from him. The other guy I have done some busieness with him only because the other shop was so busy and I needed to get my daily driver fixed. I am going to take it to guy who I have known all my life. I have seen his work, I really have not seen a resoration by the othe guy. Asking around town other people tell me to go to the shop so, in january that is where my Charger is going to be.

Well sound like you are getting a pretty good deal, and sounds like he will do a good job for you too.

HOWEVER,  YOU MUST POST PICTURES, GOT IT!!!

For a dailly driver and by someone you trust thats a very good deal. My prices start at $5000 plus materials. Materials usually are around $1500 to $2000 depending on the color and just how bad things are. I use the higher end of materials. My frame off restos on the other hand have been up words in the 50's range. I've got a 69 GTO thats almost done. Theres 30 in it. I've got a 69 Hurst Olds that was bought for $12,000 and he has around 20 in it right now. We are about 2/3rds done with the car at this point. Anyway it sounds like your getting hooked up. Good luck and remember. Like Blown 70 said. We like Pics. Before and after. ;D

I just dumped $ 15,000 on the paint for my Charger and I went to 14 different shops before I decided on the one that actually did the job for me. I had a guy who quoted me $ 7,000 and for another $ 1,000 he was going to use House of Kolor paints. I went to his shop and spend about 15 minutes and my mind was quickly made up after seeing his operation. They were working on a Chevy Impala and they were applying bondo like a spackler finishes a sheet rock wall.........................what I'm trying to say is that the low bidder is not necessarily always the right guy for the job. Do your homework and write down exactly what you want done on the car and make sure that your list is mentioned and made part of the estimate - that was my mistake, I started adding stuff for the body guy to do after we had agreed on a price - my bad. I started with an estimate of $ 10,000 with specific instructions of "no bondo", any repair needed was going to be cut out, pulled out and/or new metal sheet installed. My Charger had no rust on the body, just the roof was full of 1/4 holes do to rust under the vinyl top. I had him add rail connectors, paint the interior, paint the under carriage, paint the K frame, etc..

Also beware of "acquaintances and friends" working on your car. It makes it very awkward to blast them if they screw up or leave your car at the bottom of their priority list. Choose your body shop for their credentials, experience and how the end product looks. Good luck on making your choice. Oh, I chose my body guy because you could eat off his shop floor, he has his guys quit 1/2 hour before closing to just dust off and clean the shop. He is also amazing with metal work. He makes stretch limos out of hummers, navigators, etc..

Even though you know him all your life and his work may be first rate you may want to make sure he isn't using lower end materials just to give you a low price. It would be ashame for you to have to repaint it in 3 - 5 years becasue it didn't hold up. As they say "you get what you pay for"

Good luck and share some pics!

Right on man! That's my plan as well  :icon_smile_cool:

Bones68charger

My Chargers body needs little work. NO rust, nothing. I am only 25 I had it painted in 98 by a guy who just did it as a hobby. Well the paint is all faded now. I only paid 400 bucks for that job. But it did what I wanted it to do. He pulled all the dents and it kept it from rusting. Now that I have graduated from college and have a decent paying job, living in a cheep state I want to get this done before I ever consider getting married. Now is the time to do it.

He has done a couple of Camaros, and their is a guy living in town with a 1970 Charger 500 that he painted Prowler purple, if he has it out I will ask him if I can take a picture of it.  Anyway....he painted that Charger also so I might stop by his house and see for how it looks.  I will keep you all posted!

cool440

When I went shopping for a quote it seemed that when a muscle car drives up so does the price.  The trick I have found out is in preperation of the body. 90% of the paint job happens prior to the first coat.

If you are willing to prep it you can also paint it.  I was amazed at how easy painting a car was when I painted mine.  I learned a lot from all these guys and my paint came out with no runs and not a spec of dust.  My wife was probably the most impressed at my work.  If you need cancer cut out and metal work done and you don't know how then contract that out and smooth the body yourself.

My paint looks pretty good, but I will be painting her again because of some body work I should have taken care of before hand. :icon_smile_cool:

You will be amazed at how easy painting a car is and after your done you can say YOU did it, which feels pretty cool! :yesnod:

Take care and have fun!

4402tuff4u makes an excellent point about it being very difficult to argue any problems with friends who do work for you, especially if it's done on the cheap. I would have a hard time turning down a job by a reputable shop for 1/2 the price, but be prepared for the eventuality of getting less than their best work.

Thanks for all the replies; I am going to take it to a couple of other shops in the area to see what they say also. I am not going to have this done for about a year and a half so I have plenty of time to figure this thing out.  I am not looking for show quality because this is going to be a car I am going to spend a lot of time on the road driving. That does not mean I want a cheap job either.  The $3500 estimate was just for the car itself not the door jams, engine bay or trunk. The door jams and trunk are in excellent shape, so I don't think I need to paint them. The engine bay I would like to get repainted so I am sure that will bump up the price. I will admit I was a little naïve about how much this would cost. Man I picked an expensive hobby! But when I get it done, it will be a really fun one. I am just lucky I stumbled across a Charger that I was in such good shape! I am a very lucky person!

Make sure he uses Quality paint & sealer & primer like PPG,DUPONT,BASF. Most shops nowadays get that cheap no name brand products & mix brands because they buy what ever is on sale that week. For a certain amount of money the shops only going to spend a certain amount of time. Heres what will usually happen. Lets say for $3,500 they are only going to spend 3 weeks or 120 hours. After 2 weeks & 80 hours only half the car or less is done. That means the next week the other half gets cranked out fast & quality goes down the tubes. Get what you pay for. For $7,000 the other guy may have taken off the doors, Hood, Trunk, Painted jambs, trunk, engine compartment, ect. BUT, Its also possible he would do the same quality & spend the same amount of time as the other guy for twice the price, In that case you got ripped. But hard to tell without a Crystal Ball. LEON.

my friend was doing my charger. now a year and a half has past and the charger is not finished and he's not my friend any more. good luck. Rene

Good point - I won't mix "friends" with business anymore after i was quoted a $1400 job from a friend in my car club which ended up to be over $7500
Not friends no more  >:(   After that I HATED the car - cause it reminded me of what happened to me. Sold it as soon as I could.

Think it over - and over again.

I am not getting my car painted for over a year. I live in a small town in western Nebraska. I do not have a ton of shops to go to. I have been asking around town. I would not call the guy a friend, just a person I have known all my life and trust. I bought my Charger from him, so I kind of feel loyal that he held on to it for me till I could get the money to buy it. He could have sold it to another person for a little bit more money, but he knew how much I wanted it and held on to it for me. So I think I should give him an honest shot. My door jams really do not need to be painted. Maybe my engine bay, I am just saving as much money I can. My Charger is not going to be a show car. We will see what goes on in the future.

Yeah, I hear ya there. I kind of have the same problem with a member here who posted in this thread. At first it was all cool. I sent a check to buy some paint from him and after that I could never get a definite quote from him. Not to mention I told him not to a cash until a little later which he did not and was the one who fubarred my account. :flame: When I sent emails a lot of the time I could never or rarely got a reply or call back. He always claimed he was busy but, he wasn't so busy because I caught him a few times on here after the fact I sent him an email during the day. Never called back like he said he was going to. Now, I'm just trying to get my money back and I'll be selling my car to hopefully get something already done. Which I hope I can find.
Heck, I even tried to take the car apart and now here I am with the car apart for no reason now I'm stuck with putting it back together.  :flame:

Kinda like somebody agreeing to paint a car sort of as a favor to a friend and then getting blindsided by that friend saying he got ripped off?
When I was just a very young lad I looked up and told my dad, a bareback rider's what I wanna be.  I want the whole world to know about me.  In the rodeo arena I'll make my stand.  I wanna be a rodeo man.  I'll come flyin' from the chute with my spurs up high, chaps and boots reachin' for the sky.  Spurin' wild with my head throwed back, you'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.  You'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.

What town?  There's a little shop here in Kearney that does really good work.  It's where I plan on taking my Barracuda when I can afford the paint/bodywork.  I got quoted 5k for the rust repair and paint, not including the cost of the replacement body panels that I will need.

Okay Troy I sent you PM to go ahead and lock this thread if need be or delete posts. I apologize before hand. Okay I'm going to clarify some things here. Rather you want to believe it or not. Okay Russ, I didn't have to choose you to the paint car. I figure I saw you was a college student and I figure I would of helped out. Second off, you broke my trust with you when you never returned calls that you said you would or return emails after I had sent you the money. Think for a second of how you would of felt? I think it would make anyone uneasy. I even told you that one of my pet peeves. Heck, people at work know that as well. I have kept all logs of emails and in and out phone calls to my phone. I keep things like that for these purposes (in case) and unfournately, I had a bad feeling based upon things  that this was going to end up like this.
Additionally, last week I sent you email telling you I accepted your apology but at the same time, I never heard one word back from you. Not even a sentence over a 4 day period. I also told in that same email that I would not be getting the Challenger painted after all that happened before the thread I posted yesterday. And as for check thing how could you get it mixed up? At first I didn't mind so much but, when things became unglued I didn't know what to believe? One thing led to another and it seemed as if I was being stringed along. Before you reply ask yourself how you would of felt. And as for not having the money? I told you before hand that I had been hashing it out with the bank on them messing things up because there was errors on the account. I just got my account switched over to a different bank and I told you specifically to wait. As for paying the overdraft you are right but, even then I decided to cut you some slack there because I thought I could trust you.
Anyways, I'm not going to continue writing but, I will say based upon your actions and not knowing you well enough how was I suppose to react? I had already tried hashing this out with you last week. As for the cost of the paint booth you never mentioned one word of that to me any email or phone transaction. BTW, I was sleeping last night and didn't wake up so long ago. Anyways, I sent you my address as requested. Thank you. Again my apologies Troy.
