A thought. Why no Dodge emblems?

Has it ever been explained why Chargers (2nd generation anyway, not sure of the others) have no Dodge markings anywhere on the car? The closest items is the Fratzogs here and there (turn signal lamps, horn pad centers, sometimes on the cluster of '68 cars), and the Chrysler Pentastar on the fender. Why no lettering like the other cars?

66/67 have DODGE letters on front of hood

3rd gens have them on grilles on 71/72 and on hood on 73/74... all four years also on deck lid

Not on the 2nd generation they don't.

Sorry, just edited my post, was incomplete.

maybe a reason is because thre was a C body simply called DODGE... no "last name" on those.

Why would they use Dodge on the backs of 2nd gen Coronets then?

BigBlackDodge

You just knew who made the 2nd Gens! :yesnod: No questions asked.

I had read years ago it was to keep the car uncluttered. I found this on another site while trying to get confirmation...

Trim was kept to a minimum to enhance the "clean" look of the car. The flip-top gas cap was nearly a victim of this "cleansing", but was saved by none other than Vice President of Styling Elwood Engle. According to Sias, the gas cap had been around for quite a while in numerous locations. Sias had been trying to get rid of it, but one day Engle walked in and "plunked it down right where it is today"

And yes there was WOMs, rocker trim, etc available, but even the R/T didn't use callouts for the 440 where the other models did. There was the decal package in 1970 for hood callouts, but many other hands had been in the mix by then.

I always figured they thought nobody would believe a Dodge could ever look that good so why bother putting the badge on it.  ;D :icon_smile_wink:

I think it had plenty of brand recognition even before the Dukes.

What about the 1968's? It was a fresh design. Still no Dodge markings. I tend to agree with the 'keeping the appearance clean' theory.

6pkrunner

That's what was meant Jim. In 1968 it was fresh and the designers still had sway. Also in 1969 the clean look was still in vogue. But by 1970 personnel had changed and wild colors,  bold in-your-face graphics and bold callouts were catching on. But still those were optional.

Maybe that's why the 68-70 is so far ahead of those cars. :P Lose the Dodge emblem and become the most sought after muscle car in history.  :nana:

Well there, the '06 and the second gen. Chargers have something in common after all. :rotz:

There have been other models that didn't include the make. The Oldsmobile Aurora for one, i have read that is something the marketing people do on occasion when they try to move a model up market.

Wakko

That makes sense.  Instead of reading "Oldsmobile" and writing off the car in your mind, you'll look at it and say "Aurora, nice car...wonder who makes it."   And it actually IS a helluva nice car.  RIP Oldsmobile.   :'(

Yep..its a marketing ploy to put a bit of distance between the "bread and butter cars" and your "Specialty" car. CHrysler knew they had something special, and a lot of the motoring press at the time said the first gen was basically a coronet with a fastback slapped on. So to put a distinction between the coronet and the other mainline cars, they never even mentioned the Dodge name.....
simple, but it worked... ;)
