Working on the 68 charger today, when I decided to check the torque on the essentric bolts on the upper control arm.(car has had complete nut & bolt restoration) Anyhow,I had a torsion bar on the front bolt, with a socket extention & as I was tightening the nut,the loom to the horn relay got cought around the extention bar & guess what  :'( the relay pulled out of the metal housing & earthed itself.Next minute, the wire melted back to the alt, plug on firewall & melted the fusable link. This all happend within seconds,by the time i RAN to get a 1/2" spanner to disconnect battery, it was to late. This all happend because i am having trouble with wheel self centering,to which i have posted in wheels & suspension.Any way i have a new spare engine loom,to whitch i fitted today. :icon_smile_big

Ive always been a fan of those quick disconnect battery terminals so you can cut the juice in a case like that.

With the top post battery I just don't tighten the neg. post all the way. Makes sure it is down all the way and it works fine. It should only come off by twisting it or its too loose. Done this for over 10 years and it always starts and never comes off.

It just goes to show how easily and quickly any kind of freak accident can happen.  Glad you weren't hurt and glad the car wasn't burned to the ground.

Believe it or not,I only tightened the neg post the DAY BEFORE. In case of any problems that I might have after a complete resto,I always left the term loose. The term will now stay loose. Thanks guys.Adam.

I had the dash out of my n'yorker and had to move the car out of the way.  Figured it was only 20 feet what could go wrong?  The terminal broke off the switch and ground to the dash frame.  I smoked a fusable link. :rotz:  Talk about gremlins, it took me months to find all little the problems it caused.  Glad you didn't sustain anymore damage then the wires and your pride.

Guess I know now why Chilton manuals say to disconnect the battery before doing anything.  Oil change...disconnect the battery, suspension work.....disconnect the battery everything, trunk seal change...disconnect the battery.
