Is there any way to track down a license number? YUP! Found it!

I remember the license number of my old '70 Charger and I'm wondering if there's a way to track it down? This is in Oregon by the way.

I don't think there is legally, unless you know folks who work in law enforcement or work for a government agency that has access to such information.

It's not a matter of legal or illegal, the tag will have been reassigned long ago.  Now if you have the VIN number, then there's a chance of finding it.

Yes, but if the original plate is still on the car the number would match the last registered owner.

How about current tags?  There's a certain Cuda I've been trying to get ahold of the owner of, for nearly a month now.....

I had a similar situation arise here with my 71 charger.  I was trying to get the title for it and I went to the DMV with the VIN.  They ran a search on it and found a live title out there for it.  They said they couldn't legally tell me who was registered on the title but they said in effect that he was in prison.  That wasn't their exact words but the guy was hinting strongly at it.  So if you have the VIN, with a little luck you might be able to track it down to at least a particular area.  Good luck with your search.

Bull, not necessarily.  After a few years the system will purge old and expired tags in some states.   Current tags are naturally runnable, but I don't think the general public has access to that.  Cops of course do...if you know one willing to help you out...

Here in Oregon I'd probably have to do that anyway because the privacy laws are pretty strict. If the car is currently registered I might have a chance on my own, but chances are it's not.

A long shot, but a shot nontheless. I sold the car about 14 years ago so it could be worse.

Back in Kansas every time a car changed hands the car would get new plates.  Not so up here, the tag stays with the car so the chances of your old car still having those plates is positive.  Unless someone across the river bought it and licensed it.

That is how it is up here. each owner gets new owner gets new plates. I also remember one time when they changed the plate design non-vanity plates received new numbers. But the last few changes they gave you the same number you had.

Like Mike said, in Oregon and Washington the original plates stay with the car unless the owner wants to pay for an updated plate, a novelty plate or a vanity plate, or unless the owner moves to another state and registers it there. It could have easily gone to Washington and if it did the plates would have been changed if it was re-registered. If it was not running at the time if and when it did cross a state line it's likely they didn't get new plates. But all I would probably get in that case would be the last registered owners last Oregon address. I know the guy I sold it to lived and worked in Portland but like I said, that was about 14 years ago.

PM me the plate Curtis.  I've been in the Starbucks Drive Thru over here on Mill Plain & I-205 several times when the men in blue are in there hangin' out.  They always get a kick out of my car, maybe I can work 'em.

Yep, in Ohio the plate stays with the owner and we get to have two plates,  I need to move.

Found it! It's in a small town in the middle of Oregon, a long ways away from me but I plan on going down to have a look at it as soon as I talk to the owner. I talked to the owner's mom today and the old red, base-model '70 was sitting in her garage as we spoke. She said he also owns a brown '70 500 w/318, a '70 parts Charger and a convertible something-or-other that she couldn't remember. He's away on business but I'm sure I'll get the chance to talk to him soon. I mean who wouldn't call a guy who has 11 years worth of history on his car? I know, no pics and I'm sorry. Hopefully he'll email me some after we talk. But it sounds as if the car's been restored and that's a good thing. It was getting pretty beat up by the time I sold it. Here's an old teaser pic until I get some updated ones. See that big dent in the passenger fender.

That did come up during my conversation with the guy's mom. She was hinting toward yes and that it would be in the $20k-$30k neighborhood. It had better look a lot nicer than it did when I had it for that price range. I doubt I could swing it but it sure would be nice to have the car in which I spent the years between 15 and 26.

I hate to dredge this old thread up without new pics but I did get another lead on the car today. I dug around and found the phone number of the owner's mom (who's storing the car) and she promised to take pictures of the car and mail them to me. I started to give her an email address and she told me she doesn't do email so it's going to be prints mailed to my house at some point... I hope.

For the past year and a half I've asked the current owner to send me some pics of my old 70 and at first he said no problem but for some reason it eventually became a problem. Not sure why but I keep asking for them every 3-4 months or so. Hopefully it will happen this time because it's going through his mom instead. None yet. The current owner is way less interested in the car than I am apparently. Way back in June of '06 I contacted him and asked about the car and gave him a bunch of history on it and we agreed to swap pictures of it; his current pics for mine from the 80s. Well I sent my pics that same night and I never got anything from him. Every once in a while, like every 3-4 months, I'd send him another email politely asking for the pictures he promised. The second time I asked he put me off but every time after that he just ignored me. For more than two years he ignored me. So two-and-a-half years later (yesterday) I finally sent a rather pointed message saying I don't really appreciate being ignored for two years to which he replied with a hearty f*&$ you (in not so many words) saying not to bother him again and that was it. What's funny is it only took me one phone call to his mom and she offered to take pics and mail them to me a few days ago. Why he couldn't do that two years ago is beyond me. His mom sounds like a really nice lady so I'm guessing this arrogant you-know-what takes after his dad.

All I have to say is if you really can't send something to someone; be it pictures, parts or whatever, at least have the balls to say no and apologize rather than put people off and ignore them.

Oh man that sucks I've had a similar situation.

My dad was the original owner of a '69 Coronet and had it for over twenties years and then got rid of it in the early 90's.  It passed hands a few times and got a repaint and new interior and then my brother bought the same car as his first car (was also my dads first car) when he was in high school.  Then not long after my brother graduated he got side swiped by some lady and sold the car, which I never thought he would ever do.

But anyways me and my sister in law tracked down the car and were going to see if we could purchase it for his 30th bday but the guy had like some crazy amount of money into it so buying it wasn't an option.  We just asked for some pics and he said he'd send some but we haven't heard anything or gotten any pics and its been almost a year now.

It is definetly frustrating of going through the work to track down the car and find it and then not even get a picture of it in its current state
