I was wondering if I could use a electronic wiring harness from a early 70's pickup(73-74) onto my 72 charger to get rid of the points ignition? They look to be about the same connectors. By the way, the car is a non ralley dash harness.

Chryco Psycho

actually the Ecu is easy to wire in , you just need to hook 12v  [generally dark blue in you rexisting harness ]up to the Blue / yellow wire to the ECU , use the Black / yellow wire to negative coil & swap the dist & plug it in & set the timing

bohog

You can also purchase the ECU harness itself from Mopar Perf. I think it's about $15.00

So, what your saying is swap the blu wire and hooh it up the the blue and yellow wire on the ECU and then the black and yellow wire to the - side of the coil? What about the bigger ballast resistor?

Nacho-RT74

if you use the 4 pins ECU module, don't need the double ballast resistor, single will be fine.

Doble ballast resistor is for 5 pins module, what is extra feeded by that extra source from ballast

this may sound stupid, but all I can ever find is the 5 pin setups. What are the 4 pins usually on?

I am pretty sure all the new ecu's are 4 pin.  If you are scrounging a junkyard, try to find one in the newest models that still used them.  The ECU's you order from Mopar are 4 pins.

Chryco Psycho

THE PLUG IS aLWAYS A 5 PIN , THE PINS IN THE ecu USUALLY HAVE 1 MISSING, I hate caps lock  ::)
any ecu after 76 has only 4 pins as do all of the performance boxes

Nacho-RT74

right... sorry if there was some missunderstood, the plug is allways 5 pins, is the Module itself what changed from 5 to 4 pins... but both ( plug and module ) are intrechangeable if you use the right ballast setup... 5 pins with double ballast resistor and 4 pins with single ballas resistor.

Well, in fact, you can use the double ballast with 4 pins module, is just only the secondary resistance won't be on use.

If I would buy a engine harness that already is a electronic ignition set up, would that simply plug into the the fire wall or what I have to do to make it work? I'm talking one already out of a '72 Charger. And would '73 & '74 harnesses be different from '72 harnesses?

74 is different for the reset button to the interlock

Chryco Psycho

it is easy to do without swapping the harness , it is a 2 wire hook up
you have a dark blue to the ballast & voltage regulator , tie in the blue /yellow trace wire into this
then hook the Black / yeelow trace wire onto the - coil terminal & remove the exiosting wires to  the - coil & swap the dist & plug it in

can I use the 4 prong ballast resistor with a 4 pin mp ecu?   I purchased a modified harness from year one for a 69 charger.   it is set up to have a blue and a brown on the left bottom tab of the ballast resistor,     green wire above that(gets cut),,,,,,,,,,and a blue wire on each of the tabs on the rihgt hand side of the resistor.   following this? sound right?

Chryco Psycho

it sounds right But there is no need to wire the second 1/2 of the 4 prong resister , just wire the blue & brown , the green blue does nothing with a 4 pin ECU

charger72

I got mine done. Found a 5 pin harness from a 73 in the shed. it is easy to swap harness' just plugs into the same spot. I would have cut the wires like Niel said, but I found the harness.

andy74

its as easy as chryco said,i did mine in an hour and a half, and that was cause i drank 2 beers while i was under the hood

Chryco Psycho

I did one in Ardmore in 6 minutes ...yes people were timing me  ::)
