Inside color for front valance panel on 69 Charger

Ok, I just did a search and could not locate anything.  I am trying to find out what the original color was supposed to be for the inside part of the front valance (piece under front bumper that holds the parking lights) for my 69 Charger.  It is currently painted body color but was wondering if it should be semi flat black like the rest of the front part of the rad support?

Anyone have any thouhts on what should be correct from the factory?

my 69 was un restored when i got it and it was painted body color. but i think there may  have been differences from who ever painted it. they were painted off the car at the factory i believe  ,looking at the way my original was painted .
i think some of the guys on here have said there original front valence was black on the in side  also. not too sure though

Ok, thanks for the input.  Mine is currently body color but while the car is at the body shop being repaired, I wanted to make sure it came back the correct color.

Chrysler didn't go to any effort to paint the inside of the valance, It may have body color on it but it's going to be from overspray. It should either be black E-coat or red oxide primer

This is one of those conflicting answer questions on what is correct.Mine had blue overspray from the previous paint job,and when I started sanding it down,found nothing but black under it.

My '68 valance was toast, but all factory and it was black inside. There is a stack of original paint valances at my local yard. I will have to look at them and see what they look like inside.

I agree......My inside valance was peeling paint (it was resprayed body color).  I took it out and was going to respray it body color, then I did some further investigation when I was peeling the layers of paint.

I found that under the orange there was a bit of grey primer, a dusting of R6 (orig color) then a thick coating of black.

This would concur with Bill's statement of having the black coating as the base......

I repainted mine black on the inside.


I looked at a few unrestored cars as well.  have a small pic of a B5 unrstored 69....

All the unrestored originals I have seen have been Black. Unfortunatly 9 out of 10 restored cars will have it body color. When I restore a car I do them black. What color Black you ask? Same color black used on all radiator core support black outs all Chrysler cars used (Also unfortunatly usually painted body color on most restored cars) This is a totally flat black best duplicated using PPG'S DP90 Black epoxy Primer/sealer. Ok, thanks to all who replied.  I guess while it is in the body shop, I will have the guy paint the inside black before he blends in the rest of the paint.   This way the color will overspray the black like original.

The valance backside was body color, and then shot with black out at approximately the same time that they did the radiator support black out.

That's what my 68 looked like when I removed it. Body color and blacked out in the middle.

Ever since this thread, it is something I pay attention to. On 68-9 valances, it appears the painter used the turn signal cutouts as guides. They would stop somewhere in that area. Sometimes the paint barely makes it to the cutout, sometimes it goes to the middle of the cutout, sometimes just to the outside edge. This is a difference of inches, so I think it was done by eye, and never the full interior surface.

The valance I used on my 69 RT was a used original off of another car, it looked like that as far as the black out went.
