This might be a stupid question with an obvious answer, but I don't know. Can anyone tell me what is the function of the spring around the brake drum? I've always wondered. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure they are meant to minimize brake drum noise and/or chatter when the brakes are engaged.
Kind of a vib dampner

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

It's a noise dampner to keep harmonic noises down that could possibly crack the drum....if you notice at a machine shop....when the turn drums or rotors...they clasp a rubber strap around them for that same purpose during the turning process.   Same for flywheels too
