If a used car dealer had possesion and their name was on the title, they owned it.

I'd say you are the fourth owner of the car.

EDIT - Great looking car BTW.

I agree, you're the 4th owner unless the original guy is reincarnated & wants it back. I'd want it back if I was reincarnated, it looks great.  :2thumbs:

I have never heard of a dealer being counted as an owner so I would say you are the 2nd owner. With some exceptions dealers do not put the titles in their names.

terrible one

Yeah, I guess that technically and legally you would be the 4th owner, but I would see it as you being the 2nd owner.

You would probably be the 2nd "registered" owner as title's are usually just assigned by dealers.

If a dealer is considered an owner than no private party buyer can be considered first owner. Actually, come to think of it, Chrysler Corp. owned the car first before the dealer did so anyone who buys a "new" car is actually the third owner. ;D

Don't worry, it won't last long. Soon enough I'll be writing something that makes absolutely no sense.

Let's say, for some reason, the police or the DOT needed to trace the history of the particular car in question.  They can search their records and see that Jim Curnane is the current owner.  Now they are interested in who owned the car prior to him.  Would the two used car dealers not show up on the DOT files as registered owners of the vehicle?   :shruggy:

Maybe it is different from state to state or in my case, province to province.

In Ontario, when a used car is for sale, the owner is obligated to provide a "Used Vehicle Information Package".  To speed up the process, in the past I have obtained this document prior to seeing the car.  Simply walk into any Ministry of Transportation office in ON and provide the VIN and $20.00 CDN and they will print out a two page report that shows:

Section 1 - Vehicle Details (VIN, Year, Make, Model, Colour, Engine Size and whether or not it has a "branding" as in it was once totalled and rebuilt)

Section 2 - Current Registrant (The name of the current owner and his address as well as the date he / she registered the car)

Section 3 - Ontario Vehicle History (The names and addresses of previous owners and the dates they registered [ownership / title changed hands] the cars) This as been helpful as I trace the history of my car, even though it only goes as far back as 1990.

Section 4 - Lien Information (Whether or not there are any liens on the vehicle)

Section 5 - Bill of Sale (This section of the document acts as an official bill of sale for the Ministry of Transportation)

I'd be interested to see what would show up in a case such as this.

I think in the end, if it were my car and if I were planning on selling it, I'd be up front and honest with the potential buyer and let him / her know the truth.  Let them make their own decision or judgement as to what owner they will be, either # 3 or # 5.  If it is a quality car and all is legit, I am sure they won't give a shit!

BTW - I also thought about the manufacturer being the first owner yesterday but knew that would spark a whole new debate.   :yesnod:

Wow Thanks for all of the opinions this is a controversial subjet. I feel I am the 2nd registered owner I wanted this information because when I show the car that is usually one of the first questions your asked when did you buy it  and how many people owned it not for resale purposes  I like this last statement if I were to sell tell the truth no one will give a shit
