The script says "Shelby Cobra II" that would mean one of these:

I HOPE...

Maybe the scriptwriter thought he could get Payola from Ford, but Pontiac was more willing with the $$$  :icon_smile_big:
I don't think Burt would have driven the Pinto-stang.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Nope he is right, that would have been a Mustang 2, think about it for a second.

That pic of Burt is just gay on your part.

Well Then...
I can see why they would have changed it to a 6.6L Fire-chicken... that poor old 302 couldn't get out of it's own way.  Plus it wouldn't be much of a movie with the Bandit  F ound O n R oad D ead waiting for a tow-truck. :icon_smile_big:
There never was a 76 Shelby Cobra though... Shelby would have nothing to do with Ford after 1969.  That's why he went to Dodge in the '80s.
That pic up top is a 1978 Mustang II King Cobra (one year only).

I am happy with the car they did use in the movie....here is mine.  A little known fact is that they actually used 1976 Special Editions in the movie with '77 front clips because production had not started on the 1977 model year when filming began. One shot that hints at this is when Bandit is parked at the Texarkana sign and the car has '76 Honeycomb wheels on it instead of snowflakes.

BTW: Here is an old picture of a Mustang II at a wedding that a relative had back in the late '70's.

Ive always been a big fan of the 70-77 TAs. I had a nice red 70 Formula 400 4 speed car that I sold for $2000 back in 92. I wouldnt mind finding another one but there getting pricey like everything else. The car was rock solid and I rebuilt the original motor in it before I sold it. i never knew that about some of the Bandit cars being 76s, interesting fact.

Shades of Denim AMCs!

They might as well have used a 78 Volare Roadrunner with a t top. (Blechh)  :puke:

They needed a car police cruisers could catch.  Rodrunner would've got away. :icon_smile_big:

What were the 1/4 mile times and top speed for a Aspen R/T or a Roadrunner with the E58 360 4bbl? I found this info on the T/A, Cobra Mustang, and some others but there is no mention of the Roadrunner.

"The WS6/W72 combination quickly established the 1978 Trans Am as the "King of the Hill", long before there was such a thing a a Corvette ZR-1. Magazines loved the car and the Spring 1978 issue of Road Test magazine squared off a Z28, a Corvette, and a Trans Am in a street fight. The T/A was clearly chosen as the easiest car to drive fast.

As a result of the test, it was reported that it took 15.2 seconds to cover the quarter mile, going through the traps at 93.4 mph. It could spring from zero-to-sixty in 7.2 seconds and had a terminal speed of 123 mph, a full 600 rpms over the redline of 5000. In braking, the 3720 pound T/A test car took 149 feet to stop from 60 mph. In a circle, the Trans Am could generate .83g of grip which matched the test Corvette and was well beyond the .76g the Camaro Z28 capable of.

In comparison with the other cars of the day, Ford's Mustang "King Cobra" (a kind of Trans Am wannabe) powered by an awesome 134 hp 302 V8 hurtled down the quarter mile in only 17.09 seconds at 80.69 mph - this with the legandary "Dyno Don" Nicholson at the wheel. The Chevrolet Monza Spyder, one of the cars GM was banking on to be the successor to the Trans Am & Camaro, was no quicker as its 145hp 305 2bbl V8 consumed the quarter mile in 17.16 seconds, but quicker at 82.04 mph."

I did find this mention of a '76 Dodge Dart after a little more looking.

"In search of the fastest American car (guess what was on the cover, again ), the April 1976 issue of Car & Driver discovered accelerating from 0-60 took 7.0 seconds, while an additional 8.6 seconds were needed to produce a speed of 90.3 mph in completing the quarter mile. Winding the big inch engine to 4850 rpm, 350 rpm beyond the maximum recommended engine speed, gear produced a top speed of 118 mph in fourth gear. In 1976 these were big numbers, however, our beloved bird did not fare so well. The Corvette was .3 seconds quicker in the 1/4-mile time and went 6.5 mph faster on the top end, benefiting from less frontal area. The worst news of the article was a bias-ply tired 360 cubic inch Dodge Dart didn't quit going any faster until it's 220 horsepower propelled it to nearly 122 mph."
