Best high amp alternator?

Afternoon All, from sunny Western Australia.

Well, another angel got it's wings last weekend when I was able to start and idle my car for the first time in 20 years. It's been a long, windy and bumpy road but I'm finally getting some traction. I do have an issue with the alternator though. I didn't plan my electrical system very well and I ordered an alternator that was waaaaaay under powered for the custom electrical system I'm running.

So I'm running;
* MSD Ignition
* Classic Air Retro-fit air conditioning
* Thermo Fans x2
* 100w high beam headlights
* Holley blue fuel pump
* 200w Amp for stereo

Consequently, the poor little Denso 60 amp unit died almost immediately even without most of the gear switched on. I don't think a 120 amp unit is going to cut it either. I went looking through some of the old posts/threads and I think they are exactly that, old. I see that the Mega-amp alternators are out of stock and that company (Quality Power) may be out of business. Is there anything more recent I get onto that I can have a look at?

Hello, I am running almost exactly the same things you are on my Charger aside from the 100W headlights.  Fans, pump, stereo, A/C, MSD and since 2016 I have been using a stock 1990's Dodge truck alternator. I am sorry but I don't know how many amps but it was a auto parts store purchase and has been flawless so far. I should also mention that I upgraded the wiring to the alternator and bypassed the bulkhead per the thread that is on here from Nacho.   :Twocents:

Hey Timmy, do you know what model of Truck it came out of, I see there are a few different listings for different types and sizes.

Actually, I had the year wrong. Was thinking of my starter. I have a 88 or 87 Dakota alternator. It had the v groove pulley and 2 fields. I had to modify the spacers to make it align correctly. I believe I have the 120Amp

1997-98 Dodge vans and others, or 97-98 Jeep grand Cherokee were equipped with a 130+ amp alternator. That's what's worked well for me for the past 8 years. My car has fuel injection and electric fans, but the stereo is super basic  :shruggy:

It does take some "fiddling" to get mounted up, but it's not that hard

Can you get the V groove pulleys with the 90's stuff? I think that is why I went with the 80s alt

That's a good question, it will have a serp belt pulley on it. I don't recall if I took the pulley off my old "square back" or found a pulley laying around. I know that's not helpful, but coming up with a v-groove pulley wasn't that hard. Sometimes parts stores or shops have various alternator pulleys laying around

Awesome! Thanks guys for the info. I'll have a look at the Jeep one seeing as though I don't think the 120 amp will be enough. I like the fact as well that they are the Denso ones as well and I might be able to actually get spares for it here. Looking at the pics of them, they look like they have a pos and neg for the field winding. How do you wire these?

My Denso120amp will put out about 65amp at idle.  :scratchchin:

I've ordered one of the Jeep ones (5.9L / 136 amp) from Rock Auto. Lets see what it looks like when it comes in. Is there a particular way these are wired?

I can only speak for the one in my car the 1980s variety where I just connected the two fields like stock and then the large one for the battery .

The field wiring doesn't seem to matter. Either wire on either terminal should work

I also went with the 88-89 Dodge truck and van alternator. It's 120 amp. I run fuel injection, A/C, Bluetooth radio with 1100 amp amplifier, 300 watt speakers, and 600 watt subwoofer, alarm system, power windows, trunk and door locks, dual headlights, etc. Works like a charm.

Unfortunately I can't post any pics, by the looks.

I got a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee one, 136 amp, and it is clocked differently. The position of it puts the main output stud directly onto the block. I'll see if it can clock differently, but it doesn't look like that one would fit unless there were a bunch of spacers and then it would be touch and go to see if the pulley would line up at all.

I cut mine shorter. I also have a rubber hat on it to prevent arcing.

I got recently a Tuf Stuff alt 8509DDP on "barelly" $100 at eBay, claimed to be mounted but never used. Sold with box and everything.

Sure I will remove the internal regulator becoming it into a 8509DP to keep the factory dual field setup.

I have been on a hunting for a cheap/affordable 8509DP unit since maybe 8-10 years. Patiente is the key

What cylinder heads do you have? Does the alternator have a right angle adapter? The first time I installed it, I removed the adapter and mounted the cable directly to the stud. You MUST insulate the cable from the alternator case in this scenario! Pulley alignment was okay using a stock alternator bracket.

Currently I'm using a nonstock low mount alternator bracket, alignment is a little better

In 2010 I installed the Denso 210-0138 that's discontinued now. Is that the one you ordered?

Look here, a search of:   rockauto 1988 dodge w250 alternator    shows several 120amp Denso's for not much money. It may still need the bracket kit and slight mods but mine is pushing AC/heat-wipers-lights-extra cooling fan on a daily driver.  :scratchchin:
