Timing goes up and down past the timing mark. New double timing chain and new distributor. Worn intermediate shaft gear?

That looks normal.
If the timing seems to bounce around as the engine is running, a few things can be in play. Yes, a sloppy timing chain could cause that but "spark scatter" can too. This is from the distributor. It happens when the weights for the advance mechanism flutter and allow the advance to move back and forth. Light springs can cause it too.

Thanks guys. This is a dual sync distributor so I'm not sure what, if anything, can be adjusted.

Looks kinda normal for a regular distributor with mechanical advance :shruggy: Aren't dual sync distributors usually locked out tho?

Yeah they must be, because the ECU is what changes the curve.

I had the same with Mopar dist. Changed it out with Firecore RTR, now the mark is steady with little to no movement.
