Another 318 question.....

I have a 68 with a 318 bone stock. I don't want to put in a 440. Sorry don't have the money or the know how. I want to build up my 318 to be a good little cruiser car. I am going to rebuild it in the next year or so. I want to have at least 300 hp if not more. Could some of you who are more mechanically inclined help me? I know I have asked this question before but this was like 5 years ago. I spent too much time working on my bachelors and now my masters' degree and I am only a novice when it comes to mechanical work. I only know the basics.

I know this question as been asked a bunch on here, but any help would be much appreciated. Help me and if anyone needs help on their history I would gladly help them.

I built a 318 into a 402 Stroker, cost about 8k and I got 400+ HP from it.

If you want 300 HP I would recommend a MP 360 Crate motor, IMHO I think that is the best cost effiective way.

just swapping a set of 302 casting heads & a good Cam [Engle ro VooDoo/ lunati] & swapping a small 4 bbl intake& carb will make a huge difference

Yeah I am in Nebraska. I really wanted information on what kind of heads, carb, cam and anything else that would boost my 318. I am giong to have to hire someone else to do the work for me, but I am trying to learn.

With a good set of basic tools and a shop manual or two you'd be surprised at what you can do yourself. By taking things apart you learn how things work.........but don't get carried way!

Don't be skeered by even a cam swap.  Get ANY manual that covers the 318, and follow the instructions.  Get a good set of sockets/wrenches, torque wrench, balancer puller, and you're set.  Or find a body to help you who has tools.  There's no nerves to connect, or blood vessels to sew together, or heart that will never start beating again.  It's nice to have somebody who's been through it before, but you CAN do it. 

The biggest hurdle is getting the correct 4bbl carb/trans linkage before you start, it can sometimes be hard to find.  The 2bbl linkage does NOT line up properly.  Do it right.
