I am in the process of installing a Dakota Digital RT series gauge in my 70 charger.  It monitors volts instead of AMPS.  Everything is wired in and ready to go.  However I have the two heavy duty leads that originally were connected to the OEM AMP meter.  ALT on one side and BAT on the other and then it would fluctuate (-) or (+) depending on if a discharge or charge state was happening.  I'm think about just tying them together because that's essentially what happened before only through an AMP meter.  Any thoughts or recommendations. Other perspectives?

Yep just connect them together.

:iagree: Exactly what I did. Hindsight being 20/20 I should have soldered or @ least crimped the wires together

That's what I did. I crimped them together and covered in marine shrink tubing. It's not going anywhere.
