Anyone good at guessing what an item is (not car related)?

I finally got around to straightening up my shed and I came across 2 of these left over from the previous homeowners. Does anyone know what they are? I don't know whether to toss 'em or keep 'em.

I first thought about that thing I once saw in a dungeon, but the ladder thing is a better answer. So is that new & improved one.

I believe the correct name for them is ladder jacks.
