Can anyone recommend an engine stand?

Like the title says, I'm looking for something heavy duty that I can trust.

Hi A383Wing,              08 November 2022

And might we add that it should have 4 heavy duty castering wheels so you can maneuver it more easily.

Yes, those cast-iron wheels suck.  I wish I had of put a decent set of castors on mine at the time.
I should have added my recommendation. I have my 383 on one like this for a few years now. It's a bit springy when I wheel it around but i think they all would be with a big block on them.

Picked it up about 20 years ago up here in Canada at are Harbour Freight (Princess Auto) I think I paid around 120 Canadian at the time. But other than the castors I like it.

Ditto on the 4-wheel requirement, especially for heavy old iron.

I have this one from Northern Tool: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200641861_200641861

It's decent quality and held my 440 ok. I originally bought it for an inline-6 engine build so if I was buying again I'd step up to a 2000lb+ capacity.

I would also consider a geared rotating mechanism like this: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200339473_200339473

I had a near-miss when I rotated my 440 with the heads on, it got about 1/2 way round and spun out of control due to the weight of the heads. Luckily the lifters stayed in it and nothing got hurt/damaged but it was unnerving to say the least. I was also not able to turn it back around by hand, I had to get the engine hoist out to help lift and rotate it.

I've been using this one from Summit and has served me well. I also use a billet adapter that mounts to all the transmission mounts rather than just the 4 bolts from the stand. I've had a 440 mounted to it for over a year and has been solid.

I prefer U or V type that you can have a flat pan under the motors rather than the I or T type 3 wheelers that have the brace bar under the engine making drip pan awkward.  U or V base is also nice so you can roll up over a parts washer tank.   http://www.axeequipment.com/engine-stands.html  AXE makes a good solid USA built stand, I type but is strong enough so it doesn't need the brace that makes drip pans awkward and is one of the better built stands out there.  I was lucky enough to use a friends OTC for a couple years.  12 ton jack for raising and lowering, geared rotation, top of the line unit, but they cost $5000+.  I prefer taller stands so some of mine I built myself I am going to build a new one this winter either a OZ pan type with geared rotation or one like the AXE element33 with a gear head.
