:scratchchin:  i don't get why you want to go the 904 route?.. i did a 727 conversion on my built 318 and it was a great improvment.  :shruggy:

The 904 has less parasitic drag than the 727 for when you need that little bit more.  :icon_smile_wink:

I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with John Cope yesterday, he did in fact tell me the 727 is the best route for my build.  I brought up a low gearset for the 904  and he said the 3.91 rear would make that up easily.  His comment was the 904 maybe would save a few thousands of a second off a time.  I was told by another shop (the one that did my 8 3/4 rear) that the 904 could give me .2 of second over the 727...

Anyone have time comparisions based on same setup with 904 then vs 727?
As it stands now, probably going to go 727 ...Have it scheduled to be built (he has a two week build time in OCT) in Oct.

I can't answer the question from my own experience, but I have heard that people do go to the 904 to save weight and they are quicker. I can't say why. On the other hand I also hear that the 904's, (in racing form), need to be rebuilt more often. Something like 2 or 3 to 1 of a 727. This comes from track talk and another tranny builder.  If it's going to be a track only car and you are looking for every bit of time and weight saved, 904.. If it's not pure race, 727.. Just my opinion.

I think thats the general opinion of most Steve.  I've never heard of a 904 making up a .2 but what do I know?  The numbers I have alway heard were more along the line of what Cope says.

Challenger340

I Raced lots of 904's, good little Trans, as mentioned less parasitic Drag & lower to Rotate, lower first ratio "stock",
But,
Usually was higher Maintenance, for me anyways.
2nd Gear Band burnt lots, Direct Clutchs got pooped sooner.

If I had to "guess", I'd say I prefer the 904, properly built, up to about 450 H.P. on a Street deal as "quicker".
Just 1 opinion

I would have to agree with John Cope.....on a mild combo like yours the 904 advantage is in the hundredths...not tenths of a second in ET. Heavy car with a power adder = 727....no question in my mind. I'll trade durability for a few hundredths in ET any day of the week.

Last year I ran a 11.40 @ 122 mph, 1.7 in the 60ft, 451 ci., through the mufflers, not bad for a car that weighs 3640 with stock suspension, with a little more tuning I know it will run faster.
68 Charger, slowly in the works, 451 c.i. approx. 535 hp @ the flywheel, so far best time in the 1/4
11.21 @ 119 mph, full exhaust, stock suspension, 4:10s @ 3640 pounds.

Sorry Mike.  Russ (moparguy01) bought my whole hood.  I have a fiberglass powerbulge hood now.  I should have new pictures and video in a couple weeks.  I am going to Show & Go at BIR on July 4th weekend.  I will report back.

Purple440

If I make it up to BIR this year I'll be lookin for ya!  Do you camp out both nights?  I always walk the camping area and pits so if I see your '73 I'll stop over and say 'wad up'. :p

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

I just got back from Show & Go at Brainerd International Raceway.  I ran a best 12.65 @ 109 mph.  I broke out though.  I was dialed in at 12.95 but I forgot to let up when I got around the car I was racing.

Any quicker with the lighter hood?  what does your car weigh in at (any weight reduction)?.

I have the subframe connectors in hand, looking at the CALTRACS Traction Bar System for next month's project, car should be primer black and for the most part body complete (except valances and misc parts) end of July...have the rear suspension and 8 3/4" rear put in August is my goal.
