Why no roof skins 71 - 74

Im dealing with my 2nd charger that needs a roof. Would think they would be in more demand. Google search shows last discussion was on https://www.forbbodiesonly.com › moparforum › threads in 2015. Yikes, am I doomed!

That's a question I have been asking since ever... considering ALL 71/74 B bodies 2 doors use the same, Plymouths and Chargers... what would have to say repro manufacturers about that big market? More than a Charger bulged hoods, or valances...

They allways put as an excuse the "profit" of a part...

Yes and so many vinyl top cars are now dealing with this or have been experiencing this problem so many years. oh well This is my favorite of my 3 chargers I will never get rid of it. Its my dad and I project car. I almost regret taking off the top. Now I dont even drive it for a few months until I figure out what to do.

Peel off the rest of the vinyl and have it rhino lined till you find a skin

They don't make new roof skins for lots of cars. No reason to fret.... find a parts car or patch it.

Hey rallymike good suggestions but I'm inclined to think no one would give up a decent roof unless it was already removed from a wreck of a car. Pathing it seems tricky since it has complex curves. If you have conceptual suggestions on patching I would love to hear it.

Feel like I struck gold. I remembered this car from about 12 years ago sitting in a yard near me. Its still there and the roof is surprisingly intact. I'm gonna need some pointers on this. What is the best way to remove it! I know front and rear glass must be removed. I have very little comprehension on where it should be cut.

If it was me I would take front and back glass out roll down all the windows and cut it off to get as much of the front posts as you can and then follow the bottom corner of the side glass back to the bottom corner of back window
Cut off what you do not need when you take you roof apart and know how much you really need

Are the 1/4 panels any good on the donnor car ?  doing it this way might screw up a sale for those parts

To remove: Get a battery-powered reciprocating saw with a handful of long metal blades and just chop through the A and C pillars. You could bust out the glass, but if its good I would try and cut out the seals and save at least the back glass. The quickest and brutal way would be to get a gas-powered circular saw with grit blade and chop right through the pillars and glass in one fell swoop. Literally a 10 minute job this way.

Take the whole roof home and separate the skin there. You don't want to do this part in the junkyard.

Hey thanks so much very helpful about taking the whole thing. I had no idea.
I told the guy I would save the back and front glass they both look good. Heck I might buy it also. I'm fairly sure the quarters are not salvageable. Any suggestions on removing the glass? Ive done a few with a guitar string tied between 2 wood blocks but I had interior seats to sit in. Thats going to be the toughest part of this.

Most yards around here won't sell you a whole car once it's been junked.

But, years ago I was able to do a deal with the owner of a small yard here where for X amount of $$$ I could load the car up on my trailer, take it home, strip off everything I wanted and bring back what was left.

His only stipulation was that I bring back anything that had a VIN on it.

For $100 I got a shed full of '72 Charger parts, and he got back the rusted firewall, cowl, upper quarters, and the bent up roof. Unloading was simple - the pile was chained to a tree in his yard and dragged off my trailer upside down with the fender tag and VIN tag duct taped to the whole mess.

A friend of mine was able to do this with a couple of Chevy II's from a small local yard several years ago, too.

And, If AMD is reading this I'll take two 71/72 Charger roof skins right now.

Ok looks like Ill be heading out to get it tomorrow. 2 more questions.
How do I remove that drive side c-pillar chrome. I definitely don't want to hurt it. I might even buy it.
Any suggestions of a price? The guy is usually very fair but If I remember correctly he will tell me to make an offer.

Ha thanks that would be ideal. I more inclined to take the roof though because I may get in trouble for yet another car sitting in my yard.

Taking off the glasses will tell you where the roof skin overlaps with pillars ( A and C ), but if you want a clue just have to check how high are the repro quarters available.

There is a thread around about somebody grabbing out the old roof skin to attach the replacement piece on his car. Is a 2nd gen thought, but with the overlaping areas with pillars exception, the rest is the same for all roofs.

 Maybe 1500 ??. For the entire 71 Charger.  This was about 10 years ago.
