A tragic Father's day here. We just got the news that my brother-in-law was killed on his Gold Wing today. Retired Pennsylvania State Police, father of 3 girls, all-around good-guy and my good friend & companion on many a fishing and hunting expedition.  We don't know much more than the fact of his death (he was on a 2-day trip to Indiana with a friend and his wife... and they called his wife after the accident). I'll be headed to his funeral next week sometime. These seem like such hard times anymore...

Sorry to hear of your loss, thoughts and prayers are sent to you and his family.

That really sucks, man. Why can't bad stuff happen to those that give nothing to society instead of the ones that help people?

Sorry to ever hear this happening to anyone. May the Lord bless your family and keep them strong. Isaiah: 57 Verse 1-2.

Thankyou folks, for the kind words. We know a little more now, sadly. It seems that he had a front tire failure at speed, SE of Indianapolis on I-70. A one-vehicle accident where he went off of the road and lost control. Not quite as horrible as I had imagined, but still tragic for his friends and family.  Only 54-years old....God.  I carried a blood clot around for several years under my rib-cage from a motorcycle accident in my early 20s. Couldn't sleep on my left side for many years after that.  Our old muscle-cars have many shortcomings (when compared to the safety-features of the more-modern modes of conveyance), but they don't hold a candle to the risks of operating in the two-wheel world. My son has wanted a crotch rocket for a little while now, but his mother was simply adamant that if he wanted to live in our house for even a little while longer, he'd have to do without. Is it too-much to hope that he'll learn something useful from this disaster?

dreamcatcher

Well may he RIP. He was doing something he must have loved. I once knew a guy the had a tattoo I will never forget. It simply said (Death is certain Life is not.) It always reminds me to try to enjoy each day. There not guaranteed.

My Dad was an HD biker.  We always had the locals over in the garage helping him wrench on his putts.
Mom bought him a 1st year AMF Low Rider and he sold it to me.  I used proceeds to buy my crate Hemi back around '04.

Thing is I only bought it to keep someone else from buying it since I knew most wouldn't appreciate it.  But I prolly only put 100-200 miles on it in 20 years of ownership.
I seen too many accidents driving OTR and Ill admit I don't always see bikers.  Besides living in a big city I wanted no part of riding.
Yet I thought a Yammy Banshee on the sand dunes was safe and broke myself, lol.

Sorry to hear man.  Hope you & your wife are doing ok.

My condolences .
Something Ive learned and had driven home the past 8 months.

Life is short, And NONE of us are guaranteed tomorrow.
So enjoy today while we can.

Wife told me many many years ago if I ever wanted a divorce. Buy a motorcycle. And I have zero doubts shes kidding

And I had a 1986 GSX-R750 when we started dating but sold shortly after for simple lack of use . That was 30 years ago .
BUT,,,,,I just bought a 3rd car so maybe I'm compensating

Sorry to hear this. RIP.  reminds me of the time I was riding on the back of my Dads Honda Gold Wing. He was Racing his buddies on a Road he never been on, took a hairpin turn way to fast & we flew right off the edge of curve, landed in the weeds below. Luckily nobody got killed then. My whole Family rides, Mom & both Sisters. I quit Riding years ago, way too Dangerous in the big city of Detroit. LEON.

Went for the ride today, hoping it would help. These old cars can make sense to me when nothing else does but today....it didn't work much. Too darn hot, the roads were too crowded, and it's all to fresh.  Need a cooler day and a long empty road and... I need more distance on it all. This one's going to take some time.

54 years old?  Sorry man.  Must really devastating for the family.   :'(

My condolences. Riding a motorcycle is enjoyable, but there are too many cars and too many distracted drivers today.

Tomorrow is promised to NOBODY . . . .

Dreamcatcher: Tensleep Canyon is one hell of a drive! I used to fish for trout in Shell Canyon back in the '70s (I may be conflating the two canyons) with a nearly blind Great Uncle from Greybull, but that family is all gone now (my grandfather's generation). Wyoming is still the last, good-place to me and I may end-up there again some day. Winters are a bit tough tho...

dreamcatcher

Tensleep canyon is beautiful (both are beautiful) But my fondest memories with my late cousin was that canyon at a high rate of speed in a dark racing green 68 R/T listening to a Beatles 8 track! Almost to date 51 years ago. He would have to get new tires about every 2 to 3 months on the rear  :smilielol: of coarse that was the old bias-ply tires. We would smoke them from one end of town to the other. Of coarse main was only about 3 blocks  Wyoming is a good state I spent most of my life there. I got divorced and moved up here in South Dakota 15 years ago. And I love it here in the Black Hills as much as I did there. Anyways Blessings to you and your family. Time eases pain not memories.

Back from the "old country" Sunday. Still shaking it all off. Hard stuff to process.

When the volley of shots had been fired, taps had been blown, and the flag draping his coffin had been ceremoniously folded and then handed to his widow with the words "given with the thanks of a grateful nation" I was simply overcome.

I've been laying around here all week, unable to get going. My wife is still back there helping her sister. He didn't have a will and left a big mess behind him. Don't do that to your family.

bakerhillpins

Sorry for your loss and encourage you to get up and spend some time with your son and/or your car during this time.

You'll have little success with lines in the sand from personal a POV. Spend the time educating him about them, help him take a training course or 2 even, and more importantly get him to buy the correct gear!  I've walked away from accidents with a bruise and 4 stitches where the armor cut through. Doctors were all set for hours of scrubbing road rash with nylon brushes and were happy to simply send me home. Was worth EVERY penny I spent on it ($1000 back in the late 90s). Flip-flops, shorts, and a brain bucket are just going to ensure he feels the results. Keep him on the lower end of the CC spectrum to start. I started with a 86 Honda VF500 and that could have easily killed me while I was learning the sport.
