I have been working on a 70 Charger while I drive my 69 Charger

The 70 is starting to look like a car again
It is 100 % rust free car now
Been doing all the work in my own shop
Found a young guy to help with the final straighten out the body and get it all fitting nice and some paint on it
The outside of the car was taken down to bare metal and now sealed with epoxy yesterday
Next week should be able to prime the whole car and get under the hood and doorways and interior and inside the trunk painted the final colour

I want to get the car mostly back together and the engine in it and broke in and running good before final paint so not to worry about good paint and scratches

At what point is it worth thinking about getting it insured ??

I don't insure mine until I finish with the restoration and put it on the road.  But I'm sure others might have different levels of comfort.

It kind of depends. When I built my Superbird tribute car many years ago. The insurance company I had would not insure it till it was finished. Well I had it on a trailer and took it to an exhaust shop (which was all it needed to be finished) It was cold out so I was warming the engine up while unchaining the car. It was at high idle and went into reverse. It came off the trailer and went through the wall of the exhaust shop backwards. 10K damage to the shop and 8K to the car. And NO insurance! So I would insure it if possible. I changed insurance company of coarse but not all company's will insure them if not finished. I think most classic insurance company's will. I needless to say insure all of mine from start to finish. You never know what might happen while building a car. Best to be prepared for anything.  :Twocents: Good looking car. Always great to see another one live again.

When you get to the paint is a good time to start thinking about insurance.
Hagerty does project car insurance. Check with them for all the details but the main thing is they want to see a progressing project, pictures etc.  You start with a stated value that increases every quarter by 10% which seams fair for a later stage project.
My first Charger was a Stock Car.

Gold Rush

I started restoring my '74 SE seven years ago when I bought it.  From day one to today it is not road worth but I now have a bundle invested.  Hagerty wrote me a policy that initially covered the original car cost plus some allowance for new part I've invested in.  If totally destroyed,  I wouldn't get paid what I have invested now but At least it would be something.

You can bet before my SE looks like my avatar it will be road worth and fully insured.

Had insurance on mine while at the paint shop because of all the crash shop horror stories i've heard but i think once home i'll probably take it off until on the road  as my shed is fairly secured so unless a meteor hits my shed

So it is kind of sounding like do not worry about the insurance too much till the car has to leave home to get something done to it  :2thumbs:

It all depends on what level of risk is acceptable to you. At what point ($-wise) can you stand to lose the value of the car? If you wait until it's on the road, then you are screwed if you have a car fire, a garage fire, or it gets stolen from a shop..... None of these scenarios are unheard of. For me, it's around $10k in value or when I start driving it, whichever comes first.

Some insurance companies have a 'multiple car discount'.

So for me, adding a non-running project car to my policy actually lowered my overall premium.  :icon_smile_big:

I'm with Hagerty and I got the car insured as soon as it was back in my garage with paint. As the car gets further into the resto I update my progress with them.

I have Hagerty also

Did they bug you to raise your value or just whenever you wanted more coverage you let them know ?

Same here. My insurance company allows for a project car to be covered as long as it's kept in a locked garage, I send them photos & pay the bill. It's a stupid idea to not cover the car because there's still a chance that it can be destroyed, stolen, damaged, etc. Your home owners insurance will tell you to get lost if you have a fire & your project car up on stands that can't be rolled out of the garage turns to a twisted, melted hunk of garbage,

How much are your projects worth these days?

Bet nobody has a $100 parts car they want to restore.  :Twocents:

The total cost to insure a project car valued between $3500 & $7500 for the entire year is cheaper than a tank of gas in my truck.

This.

Ive bought $500 beaters (Satellite, Coronets) and they're insured before I leave the sellers place.

I get hell for not caring about my #s rig and doing mods.  As long as its insured Idgaf, lol.
If it was a 1 of 1, I'd treat it the same, lol.  As much as I drive it wouldn't be an issue.
