Inner rockers coating.

Hey guys,

Looking for some advice here.

I got my floors out. Next I'm gonna remove the floor braces and then clean up my inner rockers. I plan to use those 3m scotch brite pads and maybe my little sand blaster for those nooks and crannies the pads wont get into.

After getting them down to the metal I'm gonna have to cover them in something to prevent them rusting up again. My end state goal is to cover the bottom of my car in either Line X type bed coating, or maybe lizard skin. Not sure yet.

What would you coat the inner rockers with to protect them with in the meantime until my floor and rails are all done?

I used POR15. if you use it, make sure you treat the bare metal with their Metal Prep.  People who didn't have adhesion problems.

Yeah I'm not a fan of their products.  I used their metal prep on the gas tank coating and it still failed.

Their stuff can't be exposed to any sunlight. It will start peeling.

The best you can do is get it down to clean metal and prime with epoxy sealer.

I'm wondering about maybe using this while still assembling everything. Then when its all assembled, hit it with epoxy, then liner.

Hows that sound? This product would be easier for these small jobs given it comes in a spray can. Vs mixing epoxy just to shoot my rockers which I still have to weld my pan to.

The UV rated product is the top coat paint, not the Por15 rust inhibitor.

Will the sun destroy my Por-15 coating if I don't topcoat it?
If the surface is exposed to the sun for an extended amount of time, the UV rays will eventually break down the POR-15 and cause it to fail. That's why we recommend you topcoat it.

BUT, If your doing inner Rockers will it ever be exposed to sunlight or ultra violet rays? I don't think so. I used to coat my inner frame rails with Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator. LEON.

I was responding to the poster that said he wouldn't use Por15 because it failed on his gas tank. I used it on my gas tank as well, didn't top coat. It failed.

Having used Por15, I wouldn't use it again. Epoxy lays on so much smoother.

I have some of that and plan to use it inside all the cavities at the end. But on the rockers where the floor pan are going to be welded to and inside the car where the cross member is, is what I'm talking about.

Maybe. I'm trying to find something that wont require mixing and stuff since you know the area, its such a small space. Plus you saw how much moisture was in my compressor. Haven't gotten my air dryer set up yet lol.

Says its a 2k epoxy. No hardener required, long shelf life. Would be perfect for these small jobs along the way. $25 on amazon, so not stupid expensive either.

I haven't tried that particular product, but I have used the urethane rattle cans for touch ups and I was happy with the quality. I say, give it a shot.

I've used this Eastwood Catalyzed Technology 2K AeroSpray Epoxy and it works well, if you keep the can in A/C it's good for a few days of spot treating.

This looks similar to the Eastwood Rust Ecapsulator I mentioned above. Except in spray can. The stuff I used I brushed on. But this was many Years ago. LEON.

Yup that hose cap thingy works with spray Rust Ecapsulator.

Used this on my quarter panel replacement. Drill a whole near one end and it soaks inside with a swirl tip. Probably wont help with what you are doing but its a thing.

So I bought the car rep primer and gave it a go for coating the rockers. I have to say its a quality product. I did a review on it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gtiUsIjgrk&t=32s

I know a few mentioned they used eastwood's epoxy for small jobs. I'd seriously would give this product some consideration. The unlimited pot life is super handy and prevents so much waste.
