What do you use to clean and paint(?) a transmission ?

Good day! (or er' evening! ::))
I want to clean my transmission before bolting it to the engine.What is the best product to clean it with?Also does/has anyone out there ever painted there tranny's?...If so what did you use and how well is it holding up?.....Any advice would be appreciated! :coolgleamA:

I painted it black with high temp. engine paint, after it got back from the trans shop. A few years later when my trans guy seen he laugh a little, I though it look good even though nobody ever seen it. Now a days I forget about it.

degreaser, like gunk, simple green or even tsp if its very dirty, then a pre paint cleaner like prep sol before paint. You could use engine enamel if you want a simple aerosol ( VHT, dupli color or plasti cote are commonly found at most auto parts stores).

For the casting I used a scotch-brite pad & solvent to clean mine up.  Then cleaned off the residue with lacquer thinner & applied some rattle can aluminum-colored paint.  I also cleaned up the pan (while it was off) with the scotch-brite & solvent, but I had to also wet-sand the surface rust off with some fairly light-grit paper (400 grit or so).

Not sure how long it'll last, but sure looked pretty going in!
