Look what turned up at Billy Bob's Steakhouse and Bar in the next town over from mine. :rotz: Before you get too bent out of shape you need to realize that this thing is rusted to hell and back but it's still a sad sight IMO. Interestingly there are still some usable parts, some of which I would not have been able to see were it not for the huge, cancerous holes where the trunk and floor used to be. In one picture you can easily see the rear window defroster motor with wiring and duct, several parts of the grill are usable, all the glass is there (but painted black on the inside), the rear view mirror is there as well as the driver's side remote mirror and some other small items. Basically it looks like they removed everything from the rails down and then built an obnoxious-looking frame to hold the car off the ground with the help of 44" Super Swampers. To cover the body cancer they installed a bunch of thin square plates over the rust and painted it all orange. It's no worse than a hlpag car but then that's not saying much.

More atrocities. :-X

Oh well that car probably would have went straight to the crusher, at least this way it still serves something.

I know that everything is restorable, but it's pretty obvious that car was BAD. I kind of like it.

I just noticed something else in this first picture. See the two holes? It's a stripe delete R/T.

And in the second pic you can see the wheel lip moulding. The one on the driver's side is still there too, and probably both rears but if so they're encased in the rinky-dink patch panels

Could be but not set in stone, when it arrived my 68 had the R/T badges in the correct position too, altough it was a 383 car.
It may be a serious project but not impossible and R/T or not, they're all worth restoring to me. In ten years time we'd all wish someone saved this one but as it sits it's quite the sight  :icon_smile_big:

Yea, it's not for sure but pretty likely. The '68s didn't have the quarter panel emblems like the '69s (if that's the position you're referring to) so that would be a more obvious situation.

It would have been choped and used for patch pannels a long time ago. Who ever did this wanted a bill board and thats it. Better they did it with this shell than a clean one.
They chould have at leased threw some putty on it to smooth it out a little.
Im sure some 10 year old is in love with it though and I guess thats all that matters, getting the kiddies hooked into this hobby no matter what.

Oh no just front and back, but done right. I believe the rear holes don't line up exactly, could be wrong, but these did and it had previous damage which was repaired very nicely, too bad the rest wasn't...
I know I have or had a pic somewhere of a 68 with side badges, it does stick out like an eskimo in the Sahara but only to us nutballs  :icon_smile_big:

I was also thinking they better took their time a bit with making it straight-er, but on the other hand, what would it look like then ? maybe worse.  ;D
It can go either way, some kid may end up restoring one that makes us drool or some kid may end up selling it on ebay right before a jump...either way it's out of our hands.
I think the best way to get the kids hooked is to show them these cars where they belong, on the road And that is still something that is too rare. If you want to see a charger you have to go to a show while those custom ricers and pimped rides are everywhere and they end up costing a lot more than our beloved chargers.
I really hope I don't crash it since I've lost one before, but my charger will be on the road plenty.

Ghoul how's the bodywork going ?

bull

I agree about the body work. If it had been smoothed over nicely with bondo instead of cobbled together with 65 patches of thin orange sheetmetal we would probably be freaking out right now.

Was it any good?

Nah, it's across the street from my daughter's school. I went there once for lunch about 6 months ago. The restaurant has a NASCAR theme inside with racecar body parts all over the place. The food was ok, and I guess they have mini car shows there every weekend in the summer.

Ghoul how's the bodywork going ?
The clips (both sides) went in great and all the rest of the metal is on the way (floors lower fenders ect)!
I've been busy.
Got a line on a good cheap media blaster in the area so its going off there before too long.
The back fenders need some work (hammer and dolly time)
Need to find a good cage
need to get a 4 speed hump
and
need to figure out how to do the sub frame connectors.
other than that all the ducks are in a row and hopefully by the end of summer all the body work will be done and it will be ready for paint.

Right now I'm a bit distracted because I have all the fixings for my big brake conversion on my impreza (talk about snowballing) and its getting to the point where I have to start sand blasting and powder coating. But to do that I need to put up a temporary blasting/coating/painting enclosure in my garage... I will post a write up on how I'm making that happen.

The moulding is all in good shape of course but the emblems are shot. I might be calling him about a possible trade plus cash on his passenger's side headlight grill bezel because the corner isn't cracked off like mine. The other side is toast though. Maybe I'll try to finagle a purchase of that rear defroster motor too just for giggles. It's not doing anyone any good where it's at now.

if im not misstaken , that was on ebay about 6 months ago....it was what was left from 2 or 3 projects.....it only sold for 2or 3 hundred dollars......i believe the body was just sitting on the frame , so that it was movable

Chargers are a Fixed Commodity, they aren't making any new ones (think we all agree on that). So I think this is a good thing. They took a car that might have been crushed and preserved it. As long as that place is open that car will sit there. And in a few years, 10-20 if Chargers keep going up in price, that car might be seen as worth fixing. That car may still see life... but it were left in its field it might have just rotted away. It's not really worth the time and money today, but might be worth it in the future.

Not sure. The vin and fender tag have been stolen over the years. I still see the guy that junked it. I can ask him. The front end damage was done by the yard owners who would move it around with a forklift. They would let it hit other cars and not worry about it. The roof was cut off last year. There was a '69 R/T a few towns away hat had a tree land on it. The top from this I hear is going on that.

If you hang on Moparts, you may recognize this pic of it in the cars in yards section.

The damage had been done by this time. I managed to get the trunk lid, hood and drivers side door from it.

yeah  Jim ,i reconise it now ,its a sad fact that some real nice sheet metal does get damaged in scrap yards , like  dents on a other   wise  excellent rot free - roof /  hood / trunk lid / were some one has walked across it for no reason. :flame:

What gets me about it was the yard paid $25 for it. They only paid that because it was driven in. Usually they haul them away for nothing. I saw that car around 1994 and the rear end was missing, some of the small interior items were missing (which makes me wonder if it was special as they have piles of various 8 3/4" rear ends in panel trunks all removed), but was otherwise solid (it was a big block car, at the time I couldn't tell a 383 from a 440, but I seem to remember seeing a 440 labeled pie tin style aircleaner in the trunk). I asked how much for the car, they refused to sell me the whole car. I offered $600, they turned me down. I asked what they had in mind and they said "Buy parts if you want, but the body isn't for sale".

I'm pretty sure its the same one I saw on feebay several months ago. Some guy back east had it as a lawn ornament.

i reckon they did not even come close to $600 worth of parts  out of that charger  back then,  since the front end was wrecked  . today would  be a different story.

The "Dukesfest" jump cars usually look about like that 4x4 underneath all the paint & bondo.

Who knows?  It may still get fixed eventually, especially if it's a real R/T.  Just wait until Goodmark makes the whole damn thing repro'd but nobody can find any more project unibodies to start with.

On that jacked up general, that lifted lee,  . . .  that was the prototype drivetrain for the Hummer, notice the differential is not in the middle of the axle for additional clearance.  Very high tech, the axles you can see, but all the u joints and gears, driveshafts etc. are out of sight, to cut down on damage while off roading.  State of the art, you will be seeing this set up in the future on high end SUV's, such as the Land Rover, BMW, Jaguar, and Mercedes SUV models.   :icon_bs:

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.
