QuoteIf a baseball is hit out of the stadium, travels completely around the world, re-enters the stadium, and is caught by a fielder, is it a home run or an out?

well?

My thinking is that if this occurs with one or no outs in the inning, it would be flyball homer, since I assume that the batter would have sufficient time to run around all the bases while the ball travels around the world.

I say he's out for the same reason that when a fielder ends up falling into the stands while catching a fly ball. The batter is still out. Now, if there was a runner on base, he'd have to tag up & the batter couldn't pass him.

I just found it somewhere  but I have no idea who she is. I do see it's getting a better reception than a nail through the finger video.  :D

Here's some more info to ponder. If a baseball is hit on a line drive, it has a speed of 100 to 120 MPH off the bat, or an average speed of 110 MPH. The circumference of the Earth is 24,859.82 miles, so it would take 225.99 hours for the ball to make the trip around the Earth & back to the field. About the average length of game these days, so I guess it's possible if there's no rain delays during the time it comes back inside the park.

Any person who could hit a ball around the world is a force to be respected and if he says its a home run, you had better well agree with him.

I say its an out, or possibly even a foul ball, which then if caught would still result in an out. Even if he rounds the bases before its caught that is just like running and rounding first before a fly ball is caught, your still out.

you failed to take into account the speed at witch the planet Earth rotates at, The direction the ball is hit. Obviously from south to north, or north to south would be different then west to east or east to west.

If the ball was hit north to south or south to north the ball could not hit the ball park again. With the speed that the earth rotates. Figure 226 hours (I rounded up), 24 hours in a day. so, since 24 doesn't go into 226 evenly (9.42 days) the ball will not land in the same park. given a consistant speed.

now, the west to east or east to west is a diffrent mathematical situation all together.

Think of driving at 100mph and tossing a ball up in the air inside your Charger, does it instantly fly back and smash through the rear window at 100mph. The Earth would spin fastest at the equator. But if the ball travels in a straight line then shouldn't any change in the Earth's speed be cancelled out or be corrected once the ball starts making it's way back? If wind resistance had no effect then the ball should be inline with the ballpark. But since the ball starting off moving with the earth, it should continue to travel in that direction and land in the same spot. My theory.
