Back in the Day

I just watched an awesome episode of "Back in the Day" from 5/23/06. If you havn't heard of it yet it's a new show on speed channel featuring Dale Jr. that has clips of all the old nascar races. This week was the Daytona 500 from 1973. All of our friends were there like roadrunners and amc matadors, and of course the enemies, monte carlos and torinos. But in the end it was a good old 3rd gen charger in victory lane. Those were the good old days. I wont spoil it by telling you who won but his name ryhmes with Pichard Retty. The avg speed was 189mph. Thats about as fast as they go today, 33 years later. I wonder what size cam he was running? Probly not the fastest 1/4 mile setup though. Anyway check it out if you are able, I looking for a blank vcr tape for when it comes on again later.

I just watched the episode of the daytona 500/450 from 1974. It was shortend by 10% because of the oil embargo. The anouncer said that Petty was doing 220mph in that race. That's much faster than now.No restrictor plates huh? Can anyone confirm that they actually went that fast back then?

no, the indy cars were the ones doing 220,..  remember the Swede Savage crash?.. i still remember the stats from that race..

has anyone seen any of the episodes with the wing cars??? watched most of the 1st season and i didnt see 1 wing car either b4 or after they were racing

Bill Elliot has the all time NASCAR record lap speed at Talladega of  just over 212 MPH

Buddy Baker ran an "unofficial--offical" lap of just over 225 in a Superbird at Talladega and he said there was more in the car.

Bill Elliot has the all time NASCAR record lap speed at Talladega of  just over 212 MPH

I heard Rusty Wallace ran a lap (in an Intrepid I think) at Taledega a couple years ago without a plate and did 228. Just a rumor?

Charlie went faster..............way faster...........Charlie Glotzbach recorded the highest trap speed during those tests, just shortly before the program came to a halt at the Chelsea facility. It was a marvel of top shelf engineering. Like "no sweat" reported Glotzbach, who by the way had earned himself the NASCAR moniker of "Chagrin' Charlie." At a real terminal measured speed, beyond a doubt Glotzbach had reached 243 miles an hour! Keep in mind that this was a "stock" car with a NASCAR spec Hemi V-8 that had no modifications to insure eligibility to race.
