Bad fuel sender - repairable?

I've had some difficulties diagnosing a non-functional fuel gauge, but as of now it appears that all is operational except the sender.
(I was finally able to get a good ground on the sender wire, which caused the gauge to peg full.)
The problem w/ the sender is that the connection of the metal strap to the 'coil' that causes the variable resistance is corroded off.
I was thinking of trying to clean it & re-solder it.
Probably more prudent to buy a new one, but I've heard/read of stories of replacement senders causing inaccuracies.
Whaddaya all think?

I have repaired them when have been posible and everything turned out good...

I've successfully repaired a sender that had failed from old age.
Only tip is to use silver solder (with acid flux) to get a good connection.  The usual electrical repair stuff (soft solder) wouldn't take on the resistance wire.
