Hello, I have a 440 (stroked to 512) and will be doing my first oil change on it. The guy that built the car suggested I use Valvoline VR1 20W50; anyone else recommend this oil? I am also not sure of what oil filter to go with. Any suggestions? Also, do you guys recommend using an engine oil supplement?

Thanks!

The VR-1 is good but there's a new player on the block:

Castrol GTX Classic

Castrol® GTX® Classic is a high performance formula for push-rod, flat tappet engines and performance cam applications.  It's blended with high zinc and phosphorus content to help prevent premature aging, wear and metal fatigue on engines with high tension valve springs or performance modifications that create high contact pressure and extreme internal temperatures.  Specially formulated engine oil for classic/collector cars, muscle cars, hot rods and race cars.

WIX is my  preferred filter.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Nice info on the new oil John.  Too bad its only in 20w-50...I prefer the 10w-40.   I kinda feel the engine revs freer with the lighter weight oil....

I concur with John on the Wix filters.   I go a step further & camouflage mine too  ;)

I like Valvoline VR1 10W30, a little thinner for street use and agree with Wix filters too.

Just me....
but I think that the exhibited Engine Oil Pressure across the full spectrum of Temperature and rpm's(Bearing Clearances in the engine)..... should dictate the weight of Oil to be used.

I'm with Challenger 340 on seeing what your engine needs
by looking at oil pressure.

Do you know what your bearing clearances were on assembly?
