......was making a delivery waaaaaaaay out in the country, get out of my truck, and as im walking to the front door I see two circular tail lights in the dark in the garage. I walk over and find a 68 charger sitting in the garage. This lady has had it since 87, hasnt moved in almost 20 years, and looks it. No rust, just dirty, and its a complete car. My question is, what is it worth? Ill go get pics tomorrow, but was just wondering. Its a complete car, 68, base model charger with a 318, automatic. Thought id start at $1000, just thought id ask here first.

no telling. 2 simple steps to make sure you don't screw yourself though
1. make sure the car is even for sale, and befriend her.. don't just go yapping about the charger nonstop.
2. let HER name the price at all costs. even if she says well just make an offer.. say, well it's your car, i don't want to insult you, just tell me your price

If you can get it for $1,000 consider that you just bought the grill and the rest of the car was free. If it is a complete rust free Texas car then you would have a great deal at a grand.

More than likely you are not the first to ask but, you might be the right guy at the right time. IMO, even a base 318 car like that will have a value of 6-8K minimum these days. Solid complete cars bring a premium.

Hopefully it's way off the beaten path so she hasn't been pestered too much about it. I remember trying to buy a '69 from an old lady way back in the late '80s and she got mad at me and said, "Why does everyone think I need to sell my car?" I tried explaining that it was about the car, not her, but she was already too fired up at that point. Same 'ol story after that, the car disappeared, the lady died and her house got demolished to make way for a lumber yard. Oh well.

You definitely have to start a decent, albeit superficial relationship with her if you're ever going to stand a chance of getting that car.

Yeah, go softly softly...
Try to gauge firstly if she wants to sell, then try to work out how much she thinks the thing is worth. Later when you look at the car, suck air in through your teeth and shake your head picking out the rot (inevitable) and the missing bits...
But don't get her annoyed...no-one likes to have there car slagged off...even old ladies.. ;)

You would have a hard time finding a parts car for 1k but if you go in and offer 5 or 6k she may get a sudden urge to investigate the value,  the same may happen if you only appear interested in the car and not her.

I agree if its a rust free texas car 318 auto.  $5000 easy.

Hey is she widowed?  single?  take her out on a date, :icon_smile_big: a little wine and dine, walk in the park, say, "you know that Charger in the garage"  how about we make a deal.....  (the movie King Pin comes to mind)  :puke:

Sublime/Sixpack

Just to give you something to consider, on the NADA site the values that came up for a '68 318 Charger were between $8,900 and $33,700.

I don't know you nor do I know this lady with the Charger, but I hope you choose to be fair in dealing with her.

If you can get the car for $1k then that's awesome. If she wants that much money for it then you aren't ripping her.

If she knows the car is worth more than $1000 but agrees to sell it at that price, I agree with you, she is not being ripped. But if she has no idea the car is worth much more than that and sells it for $1000, she is being ripped. Buying that car under the latter condition would be very unethical. Just my 2 cents.

well she probably doesnt even drive anymore - and even if she does she sure as hell cant maintain a Charger - so its take if off her hands for a little cash - or let it sit there until she dies

If she feels like its a good deal and its just taking up space its not unethical, because chances are if she dosent think its worth much she might just call up one of those car donation charitys and donate it for a $500 tax write off. I see nothing wrong with buying a car off of a little old lady, its called busness and if she didnt find out how much the car was worth before selling it she has no right to be mad at any one but her self.
Now, if she was in dire need of money  I would personally feel bad for getting it for a 'steal' but that would be the only reasion I would feel bad about it.

Bluestar

He never said the lady was "Old".  He just said she has had it for 20 years.  She could have gotten it in high school or in her twenties.  Of course I may have missed where he said her age.

I am not placing any personal judgement on whether deceiving an unwary woman is right, wrong or indifferent but it is unethical. This may sound a little corny to some of you but in situations like this I would apply the golden rule - "Treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated in the same exact situation."

once people have had a few people making insultingly low offers like $1k they dont take anyone else offering to buy it seriously,
then they come up with the "i'm gonna fix it someday" excuse
i had loads of offers to buy mine when it was visible from the road, i dont think any of them were prepared to give a fair price
so i "fixed it up" one day :smilielol:

I agree.
If I were approched about selling something, I named the price, sold the item and later found out it was worth way more I would be mad at my self for not looking into it first.
