Any ideas for air cleaner appreciated. I have a 68 Charger R/T 440 with Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. I can't close the hood with any air cleaner I have tried. Edelbrock triangular foam, stock unsilenced, 14" aftermarket with drop base. Help.

I have a 383 and am using a 16 inch drop base with 1.75 drop from Keyser manufacturing with a filter that I measured so it would have clearance.  (I did trimmed the bottom a little some other things that dropped it a little further, but I think something like that can work.  I am pretty sure the 14 inch can also be made to work, but you probably need a short air cleaner. I see them at Summit.  I also see one that looks like it drops it even more.

YOu will want to make sure it is for the right diameter carburetor.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

A quick follow up.  A 440 is higher than a 383 (and mine is lower yet because I have shimmed the K-frame, but I have a 1/2 inch spacer and 3 1/2 inch filter with clearance.

Also, and this is important, you will want to make sure you have the clearance before shutting the hood.  The putty/play doh trick probably saved me putting the air cleaner stud through the hood.

Someone with a 440 will contribute something I am sure and they should have direct experience.

I also remember some earlier threads where things like this have been discussed.

I do not know if you do this for searches, but I find it simplest to do google searches like site:dodgecharger.com "drop base" RPM

When I did this, I found the following threads on this forum:

By the way, I also did some minor modification (trimming the horn a teeny bit using a dremel and then knocking divets in so it would clear the linkage and the screws that set the floats) to get a little more drop on my air cleaner base.

Repop Air Grabber.  I modified one to work on a 4500.

I run the same setup on my 68 . Drop base 14" with 3" filter.  it is still a TIGHT fit, but it works.  There is no way to run a spacer with this intake either .

This is of no help to the OP. Yours looks great but wouldn't clear a stock hood either.

My 440 also has the same intake. I had to have a dropped base made for the car. I took a man the Mopar Performance base and a base from a generic 14" chrome one.
He cut them and TIG welded the 13" MP rim onto the deep dropped base.
I thought someone else mentioned a FORD solution, something like an air cleaner through SVO Motorsports?
