1968 Charger Build Sheet Code Help

Good day-

I've got a 1968 Charger that was originally (I believe) green with a white top, based on the build sheet.  I don't have the fender tag and am trying to recreate it.

On my build sheet, in the "Paint & Style" box ("27-29"), it lists a "66" in this box.  What exactly does that mean?  I've looked for decoders for this box, but am having a hard time finding any.

Advice?

Your car seems to have been built right before mine. My sequence number is 349503...curious what your build date is...

My SPD was April 15th too. I don't have my build sheet to know what day it was exactly built but my fender tag says 415...pretty cool!

I can't give you really too much help.
Looking to other posts, the tread indicate 27-28 is roof and body color, while 29 is vinyl roof:

https://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/threads/build-sheet-decoding-help-needed.132153/

which make you think colors should be letters, as shown in: https://www.tpocr.com/dodgebp8.html, and https://www.tpocr.com/dodge68pntchp.html.

IHowever, in your case you have numbers in 27-28... I found another thread with a 68 that had numbers 63 there, here in DodgeCharger.com:

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?topic=34862.0

You might want to contact him, but it is a 2007 thread.

Assuming thread #2 has original color, your car should be some kind of blue with black vinyl top...

I hope that somebody with a 68 and a similar 27-28 code can give you a hand.

Thanks all for the replies.  Although I've owned & worked on Mopars for over 40 years, I've always seen (and assumed) the color codes were letters+number(s).  Apparently, the "661" is correct and is the "Dark Green Poly" that was a "spring 1968" add.  Not sure if that makes it more special or something, but I was kind of hoping for a more catchy name.  Oh well, the car is white now, but may be brought to its original color someday.

Again, thanks!

yes 1969 codes is  a letter & number
1970 two letters & a number
special order colors  could be 99  or 999

68 broadcast sheets & fender tag codes are different , you prolly have found out by now  even the vin does not show up on fender tag , its only on the vin plate on dash , & stamped on HP engines & transmisions . but not on the body ! the order number is stamped in those two locations instead where the the last 6 digits of the vin are stamped on 69 and later cars

the 1968 Charger ONLY "spring special" colors were paint code "3" - Charger RED & "6" - dark GREEN metallic

1968 paint codes are 1-digit - 661 on a fender tag / b'cast sheet denotes: 6 - upper paint color, 6 - lower paint color, 1 - mono-tone paint style

Chrysler Corp did not use "poly"  :brickwall: - that is the specific paint manufacturer's name/code/reference to a metallic color on their paint chip chart (PPG ?)

1968 Charger spring paint code "3" is the same as 1969's "R4" & paint code "6" is the same as 1969-'70's "F8"/"EF8"

Dodge was very "generic" with their color names (prior to '70) compared to Plymouth -
***** 1968's "Q" - bright blue metallic in Dodge-speak VS. electric blue metallic in Plymouth-speak, etc.

My build date was Apr 15.

where is this info from?   :shruggy:
the posted broadcast sheet shows a 412 (Thursday April 12, 1968) Scheduled Production Date (SPD)

mvandale

Yes, you are correct, it was 12 Apr, NOT 15 April...that was my typo.   :icon_smile_blackeye:

66-1 (spring only) Dark Metallic Poly, became F8 in subsequent years

Thanks!. So, the change between number paint codes and letter paint codes happened from summer 1968 on?

6bblgt

model year 1960-1968 * a single digit represented color (B = black) numbers & letters were used
model year 1969 * two digits represent color (X9 = black)
model year 1970-1980+? * three digits represent color (TX9 = black)

Dodge sold so many more Chargers in 68 (85K) than in 67 (35K), that they were scrambling to meet demand. The numeric paint codes were "spring only" colors. Ours is 66-1, there was also 33-1 Charger red, there might have been one more. I don't know when they started, but I have never seen a car with earlier than a late March build date with one of these colors. Mine is 5/17.

When I went to buy the paint for mine 20+ years ago, the guy told me that it was the same color used on Ford Torinos for that year also.

Thanks Mark, but as I posted, you can find 1968 dodge Charger broadcast sheets with letters in the paint boxes, as the link I included:

https://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/threads/build-sheet-decoding-help-needed.132153/

I don't know if they changed during the year, or depended on the factory, or what; I understand they probably were in a hurry with the increased demand, so that might be what happened. Go figure.

When I look at paint codes literature published early in the 68 Model year, there are no numeric paint codes listed, but later they show them all.

BTW, because of this 66-1 looking similar to GG-1 (also green), the guy who fixed my back window, painted my roof GG-1 under the vinyl top....
