I'm trying to figure out the date code on a '69 Charger Daytona exhaust manifold. Left hand manifold casting # 2843992. Date code at back side of manifold reads, ( 4 - 10 - P ). I need to find out what the "P" stands for? I have seen a lot of these manifolds with the "P" designation in the date code. Anyone know what the "P" means?

My guess is that P is actually an 8 that has deteriorated over time.

Thanks for the reply, but it's definitely a "P". I have seen this "P" on at least 4 other manifolds. I have an email into MMC Detroit for a clarification, but they haven't given me an answer yet.

I'll have a look at mine and report....but have never seen a P before

There are a couple on ebay right now, and they have a very distinctive "P" in the date code. Also I just bought a #2843992 manifold and it has the "P' inthe date code. ( 5 - 13 - P ) at the far back, side of the manifold. Just need to know what it stands for. MMC detroit says it might stand for PM, but they are not sure. They need to do some further research and get back to me. Thanks for checking yours. Please get back to me.

I agree, just an 8 that did cast fully...

they are a distinct P

which very easily can look like a 9 when revers image of it sitting in the box

the wrong font was picked up and put into the casting and for a period we wound up with a P instead of a 9

Are you stating this happened in OE production Tony or that these are Reproductions ?

Wow thanks Tony! Sounds like the best explanation I have heard and it makes perfect sense. I could actually see that happening back in the day when these were stamped.

Tony is saying that for a period of time way back when, it is possible that particular casting used the wrong character.    A screw up.     Someone at the foundry probably got a laugh out of it.

during OE production,

sorry if i implied reproduction but i dont see where i did?
