I think the author missed the factor of safety standards.  A car gets a top safety rating when in debuts, and then 6 years later it's down to the middle of the pack even though the car hasn't changed.   Safety ratings have become an arms race in the last couple decades.  It has encouraged the OEMs to redesign cars more often.
