That is my car as it sat on the street in Berkley before I bought it.  That is even  before the dent was installed on the nose.  The owner eventually took the wing off the back and put it in the trunk. She then covered it with a cheap nylon cover.  The whitewall tire was not on the car when I bought it, it had the original Goodyear redlines on it, which I still have.  That is so cool to see.

     Dr Pratt of Antioch, California purchased our '69 HEMI Daytona from Delta Motors in Brentwood CA.  He drove it until the oil embargo in 1974.  Sadly, he passed away in 1984 having not taken the car out of his dry shop for ten years, limiting the car to 19K miles.  Myra, Dr. Pratts daughter was the executrix of his estate and moved the  Daytona and his 1958 Chrysler 300 'C' convertible to Berkeley.

     In 1984 I went to Oakland Dodge to pick up some parts for our '69 Sport Satellite Convertible I was restoring. Gene, who was a super parts guy told me he had something to show me,"Something I would appreciate'"  He locked up the parts dept., and took me around the corner.  I spied a black wing with the white 'DAYTONA" lettering.  Walking up and peeking inside the car, the faint smell of old car and mildew was noted, as I noticed the second hand on the clock moving in its synchronous beat.  I stepped back and noticed the HEMI badges on the door and though, "NO WAY."   There it was...the mother of all motors....the pachyderm of horsepower.....Chryslers famed 426 HEMI....HOT DAMN!!!!    I drove home and told my wife about it and she wanted to see it.  She was as excited as I was.

     The mechanic whose name I have forgotten, was working on it to get it running. He rebuilt the carbs, adjusted valves, and all the other work needed to bring the car back to life and make it road worthy.  I told  Gene to give her (Myra)  my biz card when she comes to pick it up.  About two weeks later she did.  I heard nothing for a month or two.  She did call and asked me if I could help her find a sending unit for it.  I did that and gave it to her.  I tried to butter her up a little  .  I heard of the car being on the street in Berkeley.  My wife and I found both cars and left a note on it.  Surprisingly she called and told us that the state of California wanted to settle her late fathers estate and she had to sell the car.  My wife and I made an offer.  She said that two other guys were interested in it.  I told her I could not afford a bidding war and I upped the offer and told her  if we could finish the deal by the end of the day.   After consulting her sister and lawyer, she called 45 minutes later and she said the car was ours!!!

     The next day we took a cashiers check to her and we signed a ton of papers and I said I was going to call a friend with a flat bed tow rig.  Myra said it runs great!   We started it up and as the saying goes, the rest is history!


     The car now has 21,896 miles on it.  It rides like a champ.  Several years ago I ran it at Seattle International Raceway.  It ran 14.72 @ 97 mph.  That was with original spark plug wires and all. Oh yeah, I drove it to the track and home.  We have taken several awards with it.  We have no plans to restore it or sell it.  It is a 'survivor. An damn nice one at that.   Look, my nips are hard!!!

Last night I was going through some boxes of random photos and stumbled onto another photo of the car sitting on the street in California.   It's not dated, but my guess is is early 80's.  A club member from San Francisco sent it in at that time.
