Starter dilemma

Did dodge ever use starter shims? My 69 charger, 383 needs a new starter. The one I took off had a shim. I reused the shim on the replacement and it sounded really wierd. Was going to try it without the shim but the replacement starter had a screwed up terminal. Just using a car quest reman for a replacement.

There is a shield that covers gaps some use. (Not needed.)
