THE STIG

Ok so I bought my 70 Charger in 2010. It was born with a 383 2BBL and the previous owner replaced the 383 with a 440 from a 75 New Yorker. After owning the car for several years it started to overheat so I bought a radiator from Be Cool and tried to replace it my self but didn't have the space or proper lighting in my garage so I gave up and sent it to a shop near by. They had it over a year before they tried to do anything with it and then when they did they told me it was the wrong radiator. I took them the radiator that was in there when I got the car and they told me they'd make something happen. They're now telling me they can't find the right radiator and the car has to go home because the shop is about to be torn down because of interstate expansion. One of the issues we're having is that the radiator that was in the car has both hose port on the right hand side, and we can't find any radiator that has that setup, they all have the upper hose port on the left and lower port on the right. I'm super stressed out about this and don't want to have my car towed home only to have it towed somewhere else again. I'm open to any insight I can get here and I'm in central Indiana if anyone knows of somewhere in my area that can help. Thanks.

The New Yorker 440 has the water pump hose coming out of the wrong side compared to what was in the Charger originally
Just need to find a different water pump if you want to use a Charger rad

Do you know where I can find that water pump?

The waterpump wouldn't dictate the location of the hose outlet, that is the waterpump housing.  :Twocents:

just google search Mopar waterpump housing, lots of vendors sell them.

Ha! that is where I stole the pic from!

440 source may have it cheaper FYI

Um might be another can of worms but I am not sure if all the brackets for the power steering pump mount the same when using the other HOUSING  :shruggy:

I ran into this trouble when switching housings but I was going from a motor with air conditioning set up to one with out

Sure the steering pump brackets change along with water pump housing, ALSO the belt chart along with pulleys specially if AC

As far I know or think, the change was made due a new device added into 73 and lates setups, an air pump installed on C bodies right where the bottom water pump outlet was located on pre 72 cars.

Of course on B bodies, the air pump was not there but the steering pump was located there, using a provision on a boss casted on block for post 72 big blocks

FWIW, I had no problems when I had to switch out a 76-78 smog era water pump housing to the older drivers side water pump inlet. While I only have an alternator and water pump, everything I cared about "matched up"   :shruggy:

Wow, that second picture looks strange with the P/S pump so far down. Checking or filling the reservoir must be difficult.

If you can't find a wp housing configuration that fits what you need, and have a rad that fits the hole, take the rad to an actual radiator shop and tell them you need the lower moved. Measure and mark for where the center of the hole needs to be. My local rad shop does it quite often for hotrods.
Again, a radiator shop, not a general automotive shop.

Actually not that hard, and fairly easy, just need to found the angle to get in ther the bottle. My 74 is exactly like that. The deal is making it with engine off, because with engine on the fan will blown away all the oil around ( don't ask me how I know it LOL ).

Remember inner fender gets a diff shape and I THINK batt also gets a bit outer from engine bay. 73/74s don't get the lower battery tray bracket to hold the batt weight, it sits straight over the frame rail so no need for the lower bracket support.

Also keep in mind the '70 Charger had 2 radiator options, a 22" and a 26". The core support will be different, so not an easy swap.

And if you have power steering and are changing back to a '72-earlier water pump housing, you may need new brackets for power steering and alternator. A mid 70's big block will have a Saginaw pump. The brackets are readily available by many sources, prices will vary, here's one that shows all the different styles:

Here's a whole front engine kit:

and pump housings:

If you're in a hurry, you can always use the universal radiator hoses to get your car back on the road.

If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.
