Every time I post I usually get in trouble, that's why I usually just stay in the background, guess it's my own fault. But here goes, my question is why does everyone ( well most) have to have an individuals vin number ? Should only be important to the vehicle owner, DMV and insurance co. Sort of me asking you what yours SS number is. If you want to jump all over me fine, don't have a problem with that at all .

good question ! dont think / hope i'm not  offending owners by posting them , if any one is ! thats not what i'm trying to do & i meant no offence by it !
nothing sinister for knowing & posting pictures of these cars on here on my part ! for  me i'm a bit of a mopar nut , & would like to  document with pictures as many as i can for future reference,  i've said it many times before ! if only the internet /  digital cameras were around when these cars were new ! what fantastic historical pictures   & awesome history file we would have on these cars , that would be around for all time ...& for the  next generation of enthusiasts to look through etc . :yesnod:

the vin is the car's identity, not an individual's. there was no owner when it was established, so the ssn analogy is a weak one.  i do partially agree with you, in that owner info does not need to be included in the info about a car. enthusiasts are tracking the factory build variations, not who parks them in a garage. we are lucky that most wing car owners are happy to share.

vin and fender tag/build sheet info makes it possible to compare options, determine  1 of whatever number built, and can help prevent fraud when a car becomes something it isn't

I can see both sides of this. Pluses and negitives of posting vins. But in the end. It would kinda nice if you at lest tried to  asked the owner first? I dont think it would be such a bad thing to give him at lest that?

If you want the VIN and you can see it in front of you fine.  If you want to post those VIN numbers on the Internet, not fine at all.
That VIN is owned by the car owner.  You don't need my VIN number, do you?  Tell me why?

People do fraudulent things, especially when money is involved. People sit at home and cruise the web for information.  So don't post my VIN please.  Post your own VIN's all day long if you want to but not mine.

Separate issue but is dealing with misuse of a VIN.  A medium grade mopar was parked in a carport in view of a busy street. The VIN was not covered. It was a pretty nice car.  Someone took down the VIN and had fraudulent paperwork made with his name and address and went over there with a flatbed tow truck and was taking the car.  Neighbors called police and the theft was stopped before he got out of there with the car.

I see people taking a photo of every VIN car shows.  What are they going to do with that info?
