I respectfully disagree.  Right now in this climate, you couldn't find a more political topic to chat about.   Why not just post that the USA has the most gun related deaths in the world and see how that works out for you.. See the similarity? No? then sorry we will have to agree to disagree

Hey Bob,

Perhaps the "offender" was a bit over the line

A bit over the line? Looked like a blatant red light to me.

The sticky at the head of this forum says "this is not a place to discuss politics" so I guess a meme with purely political content isn't considered "discussion".  ::)
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Case in point the recent thread I started called "The World Leader"

It's purpose was NOT in any way 'political'....it was meant to draw attention to a simple FACT.... that statistically as the lockdowns come off, to stay safe because the USA is now the worst epicenter Globally for COVID infections, and that people should remember that, protect themselves and stay safe !

Lets compare apples to apples, Spain is close to the size of Texas, both has comparable populations. Texas death toll from covid is less than 900, Spain has over 26,000. Spain should be washing their hands more.

Here's another, Calgary, Alberta has less than half the population of the state of Utah. Calgary, Alberta death toll from covid is up to 126 while Utah has 50. The people in Calgary, Alberta need to wash their hands and face too.

It's not too hard to post pictures, just make sure the picture size is less than 400 KB.

Spain is a bit less of the half of Texas size, not the same size. BUT Is about density and style of life not the size of the territory. Also latin countries get more contact between ppl than anglo countries. Spain cities and towns/villages are closer one to the others also with more transportation resources ( car in Europe is not REALLY mandatory like in USA where is allmost a need ). Texas gets maybe 2 or 3 main and large cities while the population in Spain, even still with 4 or 5 main cities is more spreaded out and somehow more uniform along the country than Texas. Also Spain lives thanks to the tourism which pushes the person to person contact even more, while Texas no. So... as you say, is true, we need to compare apples with apples

So, you're saying 26,000 deaths in Spain is less than 884 deaths in Texas with comparable populations? Just because the U.S. is testing more doesn't make it the hot spot.

I'm not saying that, just setting the differences to compare apples with apples. You can't compare Texas with Spain just by the number of ppl. There are MANY factors what makes differences on that comparision.

However we can talk about China againts USA, which could be somehow more fair. Size, population, somehow population density, somehow style of life ( no, I'm not talking about socialism, capitalism or whatever, but relationship and interaction between ppl )...

but, sorry, I don't want to discuss about this anymore.

P.S.: now compare NY and TX...

That's my whole point, you can't compare a country that lies and steals other countries information with the U.S. So you want to compare New York state without New York City to the state of Texas. Because what you said " Is about density and style of life not the size of the territory". Of course New York City will have the highest population of coronavirus it's the most traveled to city in the world.

Anyway this wasn't directed toward you.

A 'shocking' two-thirds of patients recently hospitalized in NY had been staying home

XH29N0G

Shocking indeed.

The breakdown in the article was

66%   classified as staying at own home
18%   nursing home
2%   homeless
2%   congregate
1%   jail
8%   other

Looks like jail, then homeless are the best odds. 3% missing (or maybe those were essential).  Might also be a rounding error.

I can't figure out the math.  Actually wonder what the percentage was staying at home vs essential and then a breakdown separately

Those driving muscle cars didn't even make it onto the list.

Well it's impossible to catch it at home....so they have lied and been been out and not been careful....or have let someone else in and they have not been careful.

The UK has now topped 30,000 deaths now...making us the worst I Europe and second worst in the world...after the USA. ...nothing to be proud of I know. That's what we get for not locking down soon enough and having lots of people packed on a small island. You have about 5 times our populating but in about 38 times the space...so is bound to spread slower....but spread it will.

Makes me laugh people saying it's the democrats who want the lockdown to minimise Trump's chances of getting it. Our oposition party's are complaining we did not lock down soon enough and that we need to stay locked in for longer (I've not been to work and barely left the house since 24 March....but it's paying off at last)....but we have no elections due for at least 3 years....it's just what happens when you are the opposing party. At least they are "sort" of trying to work together for the good of the people. I really hope to be back at work by the end of May....might go mad otherwise.

so, if there is a hero, there is an emergency situation! right ?

LOL

( great job Ron, BTW )

How about this....
The Firefighters and EMTs only respond to calls, they don't create the problem....whether it is an overblown, exaggerated, media manipulated "crisis with a 95-98% survival rate or not.
They are there to help people, not to judge how they got themselves into a life threatening situation.
This is still a very partisan subject and it is very clear that the further you are to one side politically, the more likely you are to have strong opinions on the validity of the crisis and the way we are dealing with it.

It's a good thing that authorities in some states let criminals out of jail and San Francisco is giving bums weed, drugs and alcohol to battle the corona-cooties. 3% combined are such horrible odds for those poor souls.    ::)

All, the 66% isn't the number we want. The key is in the denominator (no denominatrix jokes OK)
Ba :bump:

We should be comparing compare x_sick_stayed_home/x_stayed_home with x_sick_essential/x_essential :misbehaving:
but all we got was

x_sick_stayed_home/total_sick which is the % sick that stayed home = 66% :icon_smile_kisses:

I'll tell you what, I really wouldn't be writing this stuff if (a) I had that weed and (b) I weren't going bat shit nuts at home.

(Assuming it's really that simple) . . . Why was the world economy subject to getting taken down by one person's prediction?

Why are govts unable to put the economy in neutral (temporarily) without causing all this ruckus in the first place?

We've heard those stats for years:  "60% of Americans cannot handle a $400 emergency" etc.  Well, umm, here's that emergency.

My point is, so much of the fallout from this was avoidable.  Our whole society/economy is not prepared to handle the slightest emergency.

As for the quarantine -

This disease is such a different threat level depending on the circumstances.  In an under-staffed NYC nursing home it's the apocalypse.  In a small-town Texas high school it doesn't even exist.

We all knew this going in.  The difference was totally predicted 2 months ago.  But still, it's surprising how dramatic the difference has turned out to be.  This Covid is not behaving like a normal flu.  The scientists are flying by the seat of their pants here.  They've never had good reliable info on what's happening.

I doubt the total death toll is very under-reported.  (Yeah, it's inaccurate.  But there are factors skewing it both ways.)   From there, the logical conclusion is that the quarantine has done a very good job of slowing down the outbreak.   That's the only way to square the known death toll with the known facts about the disease.

But I agree the country is full of states/areas where they could let up the quarantine without killing a lot more people.

Was it an over-reaction?  In some areas, probably.  In other areas not at all.

The economy will re-open soon because the corporate state is getting tired of waiting.  When the lockdown started they were given a nice big wad of taxpayer money to tide them over.  But that was over a month ago and they are getting impatient.  They call the shots in Washington.

Some politicians are protesting the plans to reopen but that's mostly bullshit.  I doubt they would cross their big donors and take serious action against it.  They will act furious on TV news clips and then quietly fall in line behind closed doors.

Kern Dog

Wow...I'm happy to report that I agree with you, Mike.
Glad to see that there is common ground to share.  :2thumbs:

Thanks.   ;)

Sometimes we get all het-up about our differences.  But IMO we mostly agree on a lot of things in the big picture.
