Am i correct that the knob and post for headlight switch should just pull out of switch itself.  Having trouble

No, likely it will not just pull out.  I suspect there is a spring loaded button on the side that you have to press to release the shaft.  A mirror and flashlight is your friend.

Press the little button which is difficult to get at while in the vehicle and it will slide out.
