Anybody use a locking gas cap on their Charger ?

With the locking gas caps that are listed in the for sale section got me thinking ( ouch that hurts my head )

Does anyone here use one on their car that locks inside the filler neck under their pop cap lid ?

At one time I had a bunch of parts with a project car and it came with the lock in the filler neck but I never had a key for it   :'(
So when I sold that pile of junk it went with it

With the way the gas cap lid pops open is such a cool thing it would be very tempting just to push the button as someone walked by just to see it open but I can not see anyone dropping something down the hole unless they really had it out for you

Most of you guys probably do not let your car out of your sight when you are out and about but I tend to drive mine and park it to go for dinner or a movie ( well have not gone to the movies yet but is part of the plan )

I have used an OEM one on my R/T for nearly 40 years.

I have my original one and I will be using it when the time comes. Since I have it. Right?

What is the opinion of the reproductions sold by Laysons?  About $100 shipped.  Seems like a good deal, especially since I've heard the OEM ones have longevity issues?

I bought one of the Layson's caps in 2014 and it has always worked great. The only complaint is that the key doesn't look original, unless they've changed it.

Thanks!  Great car, by the way.  I'm planning to convert my '68 383 to a four speed, once I get another project car out of my garage.  I'm in Washington state - how are things in Oregon?

Still have one on my car from the early 90s when the stash of NOS originals was offered for $25@. Needs nothing but the occasional squirt of graphite powder.

My car came with one, so I use it.  Besides, I don't like the idea of the flip up gas cap being the only thing that keeps anything other than gas from going in to the tank...

I had always heard the opposite, that the repro ones had fitment issues?

I had one on my old Charger and have one for my current Charger.  I've always been paranoid about folks dropping stuff in the gas tank.

I have a fuel cell in the trunk. The flip cap and tube are still in tact, just nothing under the car is there anymore. Every fall i check and pull 5-6 cigarette butts out of the tube....

I'm using the seemingly factory one mine came with.

To be honest I never much thought about the possibility it was an extra, and not needed.....  :scratchchin:

I totally forgot I bought one of these from a guy parting out a '68 Barracuda when I could only afford Darts, in anticipation of getting a Charger some day.  Looks like I have something to do now during the covid lockup, looking for where it may be hiding.  Hope the key's in it.

I ended up buying one from Layson so will see what it looks like when it gets here
Sounds like they did not have it in stock but were getting 30 of them shipped in air freight so they could have them

It seems like a lot of Chargers have these locks in the fuel filler tube

What do you guys do with the locks when you take them out to pump in the gas ?
Set them on the trunk lid ?
Set them on top of the gas pump ?
Set them on the ground ??

Think If I put it any place other than right in front of my nose on the trunk lid I might forget it
My paint is not too fancy yet but some day it will be better and not sure I would want to set it on the car

Since you have to unlock it with a key you also have to lock it with the key. So I just unlock it and leave the key in it, set it on top of the gas pump. Pump away and put it back when I'm done. No issues losing the piece since the keys are with it.

Still??
That's why I don't want to order anything from anywhere. Some how with my luck it would get lost at the border. My luck.

On top of rear tire. That's where I put mine off my 80 Roadrunner while filling up. Filler is located at around the 2 o'clock position of the rear wheel well. Never lost it yet since 86'  Pump works nicely. Even set it on the back window a few times with it resting up against the window trim. I think I might have forgot it once on the pump for a few seconds. Seems familiar.  :shruggy: Getting old :scratchchin:

I just set it next to the fuel tube opening. It sits in the concave depression that rings the filler tube with the key in it. I can't close the cap without moving/replacing it.

This isn't even anything I've considered for many years.

Would rather take the 1000-1 odds I would be able to throat punch the person actually trying to steal fuel from that vehicle.

Part was $89 US funds
Was told shipping $20 but was charged $30 US funds

Come to $109 US
Visa exchange rate to Canadian was $1.44 so that now comes to $157

And of coarse there was duty of 13%
And a handling fee
Added another $26

So I ended up spending $182 Canadian to get myself an $89 fuel lock
I was thinking it would be about double by the time I get it and was not far off

This is half the reason my car looks the way it does
I would rather find stuff local ( or wait till something turns up ) than order a bunch of parts on line
